a night i will never forget.
grant came into the dining hall and found me where i was dishing up chicken nuggets to a line of hungry campers. i actually wanted to cry when he relayed the news. the king of pop was gone. i couldn't grasp it. he seemed so invincible. our dream of seeing him in person.. crushed. but i went to a sink and washed my hands and pulled it together to finish serving. after the meal, i popped in some jackson 5 tunes and we danced our hearts out while we did the dishes.. for mj. it was unforgettable. i'm so glad that his music will never die.

just in case you were wondering where i am at midnight every night, here's a peek at our camp sleeping quarters. it's working out to be a great little room. i like it. the bed is soft and the computer is handy and we have a great view of the willow tree where grant and i used to meet up and say goodnight to each other while we were dating. and there's a big curtain instead of a closet door. and the room is small enough that the mist from my perfume makes the place smell great all day.
one of my favorite things about the room is a piece of furniture that sits about 2 feet from our bed. it looks like a miniature piano bench that i've converted into my own little powder room bar. complete with glass canisters of q-tips + cottonballs, a jar of makeup brushes and my favorite eyeliner, a few stray bobby pins, and a tiny bottle of aveda hand relief lotion. woohoo for little spaces to put things.
ps. the vacation video is in the works. grant is juggling three videos in final cut right now, so it may be awhile before this one's finished. but let's just say.. i'm pumped.

camp life is good for me. it builds character.
new experiences. lots of learning. a couple firsts.

06. am wearing less makeup and more ponytails.

08. watching zero tv.
09. saw 'up'. (and loved it.)
10. loving non-baby carrots. and strawberries. and my co-workers.
11. went for a jog around the gravel roads.
12. singing showtunes while we work.
13. planning on learning how to braid my hair.
14. watching a thunderstorm from the brygger balcony tonight.
life is good.
lastly, i would like to make a retraction. please do not add my pound cake to your recipe stash, when you can add this one. today audra (my sister in law + fellow kitchen girl) made a sampler cake for us camp staffers to try out and it was the best pound cake i've ever put in my mouth. seriously, i freaked out. you must try it. it took me back to that chinese restaurant where i first tried this ultra perfect dessert. now that it's staff-approved, we are going to make it for 'ladies' camp' this weekend. mm.. i can't wait to have ten of them laying out on our counters.
June 13, 2009
after a week of camp-readying and deep cleaning, canoeing and movie nights, a campfire and smoothies, we've finally got the real thing under way. we are now serving 107 people, instead of only 18. the summer staff has been joined by our very first camp. they arrived last night, and this morning we served our first 'big' meal. it's all so familiar.. the prep, the rush, the mess, the clean.
it was fun, but exhausting. i must be out of practice. need to build up my strength. maybe i should eat more blueberry muffins next time. you know, for energy.
morning break is over. must run. will be in again soon.
June 11, 2009
okay. am taking a break from thinking about camp things and rewinding to last week. i'm finally ready to unpack all the awesomeness from our trip. first of all, i want to say thank you to grant's amazing family. everybody was so sweet and entertained us to the max. thanks for taking care of us, belmonts and friends! and here's my list of new-to-me stuff + favorite things that i found while on holiday in california. hope you enjoy. 01. 'animal style' & 'extra toast' on my in-n-out burger. no pickles, no tomato. sauce, definitely. 02. anthropologie. my first visit ever. it was magical. 03. the volcano candle that was burning inside anthropologie. 04. california screamin' @ disney's california adventure. 05. churros and frozen chocolate bananas @ disney. overpriced, but delish. 06. jonesy and della. my ultra cute new canine friends. 07. yosemite national park. sentinel dome. glacier point. 08. the cart on the end of main street usa that makes gigantic corn dogs. 09. aladdin on stage at california adventure. 10. the 'celebrate' street party parade @ disneyland. 11. pinkberry. a friend told me that i must make a stop at this spot. she was so right. sweet + light + simple= incredible. i walked in and imediately fell under the pinkberry spell. pure frozen yogurt done up with fresh fruits and favorite cereals. mm. a place where dessert dreams come true. this alone is worth a trip to cali. 12. red mango. here's the story with this one.. we went to pinkberry for round two of the perfect dessert. but when we got up to the counter, the very nice young man said that they had closed up shop for the night. seeing the disappointment on our faces, he mentioned that if we wanted something very similar, to go to the original frozen yogurt spot.. red mango. the place that started it all. the dreamiest, creamiest treat of your life. mm, mm, mm! if and when you get there, try the new tangomonium flavor. my mouth will never be the same.

the past two days have been a blurr, but i'm loving it. we're sleeping at camp tonight! in fact, i'm sitting in our little room 3 in brygger right now. we're all moved in. the laundry is done. and camp began today. already a double batch of chocolate chip cookies has been made. a mountain of dishes has been done. and champ 'the camp dog' got a haircut (see a photo of champ from last year above). there's already been a band-aid fastened to a cut finger and a game of phantom square played and a wii 'shetek open' established in cabin one. grant is there right now competing in it. i hope he's doing well.
it's official. camp has begun. we even broke the no food or drink rule in the board room this morning, and it was delish. i think it's going to be a good summer.
ps. sorry for the short breifings. promise to have real posts streaming in here soon. once i get a bit more settled in our new scene will start to feel like a normal blogging spot. i can't wait for that. when camp starts to feel like home, i am one happy girl.
June 6, 2009

about this blog

Hello, I'm Summer. A people-loving introvert whose hope and life is in Jesus. His promises are my passion and my ministry is homelife. This blog is a place for me to write about everyday things. Especially food. My favorite thing to do is sit around a table, lingering over a long meal with good conversation. I live with my husband and our 2 littles. We like blizzards, thrifting, grammar, guacamole, cheerful hearts, nice manners, good movies, and making simple, real, nutrient-dense food.
