the ants are gone!
i've been wiping my kitchen counters with white vinegar once in the morning and again after dinner and haven't seen a single ant since. my kitchen is clear. ant problem solved!! hope this might help someone else with little anties scurrying around their house.

cinderellabigbook
cinderellainside
it's true, my collection of children's books keeps growing. but how cool is this vintage cinderella storybook? it's so big! and the illustrations are beautiful. if you had seen it laying amongst the meaningless rabble of paperbacks.. if you had held it in your hands and felt the frailty of the pages, you'd have to have it too.
well, today grant went back to school (teachers only). summer vacation has ended, and i'm ready to embrace that fact.
while we're on the subject of school, i'm re-thinking how i want to do grant's sack lunches this year. i'd like to give him more variety, less lunch meat, and cut out insubstantial stuff. like, no more processed crackers and granola bars. (granola bars solved here.) i like the idea of roasting a whole chicken and setting the meat aside for sandwiches, using leftovers, and i'm gung-ho about all homemade bread this year. and i loved this post on the subject. any ideas you have are more than welcome.. i'll be right here, getting creative.
ps. this reminds me. i really want to talk more about food. the way i think about it, what i've learned lately, how i've changed, etc. it's really been on my mind. so expect a big time post, sometime soon.

after i wrote about how hot it was here, it cooled off into an awesome 75 degree slump. what a blessing it is to have nice weather. in fact, this week has been full of nice things..
1. the windows are open and cool breezes come inside our house.
2. iced tea every day.
3. lord of the rings every night after dinner, until we finished the whole trilogy. it was so fun.
4. herbs on my doorstep. which will be on my pizza tonight.
5. i wake up every morning and it's sunny!
6. i wake up every morning and think 'what day is it?' just like i used to when i was a little girl. when there was nothing to do but whatever the day brings. summer vacation is sweet.
7. no need to wear slippers yet. or even socks. still going barefoot/flip-flops.
8. the egg man at the farmers market was out of eggs yesterday. so he gave us a blue potato instead.
9. we are shopping for a piano. for reals. we've been hunting for months and months, but now- provided we can find a way to move the thing- we are going to do it!
10. roasted sweet potatoes. all of a sudden, i love this vegetable.
now the BONUS part of the post.. a scene from the blue room.
bunks
can't wait to get mattresses and start shopping for bedding!
August 26, 2010
i've been getting fresh eggs and tomatoes at the farmers market. so i decided to put them together.
egginatom
step one. slice off the top 1/2 inch of the tomato and scoop out the insides. sprinkle with s + p.
egginatom2
step two. whisk one egg and add fresh basil, s + p. pour into tomato shell. load up with shredded parmesan. repeat steps with more tomatoes and eggs, if needed.
egginatom4
step three. bake in a 350 degree oven for about 30 minutes, or until egg is firm.
and if you aren't big on thick pieces of tomato, you could easily do the egg part in a muffin pan and add chopped tomato to taste.
ps. guess what.. the bunk is all finished! it's all clean white and looks so cute in the corner of 'the blue room.' (which by the way, we've come to love. it's going to stay blue.) i'll have to show you a picture soon. i keep walking in there just to admire it.
pps. i got a bike! for 15 bucks at a thrift shop. i'm excited. but i think i've forgotten how to ride. my first ride was so fun!

apronpocket
teapartyapron
look! aunt debbie brought me a new apron, all the way from california. thanks, debbie! (and brea, i heard that you were the one who mentioned my name.. thank you so much! you are too kind.) doesn't it look like it's fit for a tea party? that's why i love it. the pocket is pretty cute, too.
in other news, today i'm doing a bunch of little things. bleaching new thrifted dishes, touching up paint spots in our kitchen, tweezing eyebrows, dumping the toaster crumbs, wiping out the microwave, etc. there's so many mini jobs that can get lost in the mix. somedays i like to think up a whole list of them and go to town. what little things do you do from time to time?

it's been hot here.
not unbearable, but hot enough that i brought the big fan to the bathroom while i was getting ready for church sunday morning. and we've been sleeping in the empty bedroom downstairs because the upstairs is so warm. and i start to sweat while i'm doing the dishes. but secretly i'm loving the fact that i can wear tank tops and not have goosebumps.
in the spirit of sultry summer, i had to have iced tea. no boiling involved this time, thank goodness. there's nothing you can't figure out about iced tea, but this was my first time trying this method and i liked it. so i'll share.
24 hour tea
1. fill a pitcher with room temp water.
2. add one large, or several small tea bags (i used black & orange pekoe)
3. set in the fridge and let steep overnight.
4. the next day, sip to see if it's strong enough.
5. when tea is steeped to your liking, flavor with lemon and honey. or agave nectar. or drink it with peaches.
6. keep drinking until you cool down!
how are you staying cool?

go outside and spray paint a bunk!
friday was hot. i foolishly let my running shoes take me miles away from home, only to regret it on the way back. it would've all been fine but for the humidity that hung the air.. to quote my mother in law, i hate the humid.
but i made it home, red and sweaty, and before jumping in the shower, i decided to get a little more sweaty in the backyard. (where at least we had shade.) grant fished this vintage camp bunk out of the dump pile at the end of the camp season, and we are giving it a new life. isn't it charming? i like it a lot. it's really sturdy, and will come in handy someday when there are more harmses living in this house. as a kid, i always thought bunk beds were the ultimate. i hope our kids will think so too.
bunk6c
project:bunkbeds is only one of the assorted projects going on lately. grant got a miter saw for his birthday and i believe that was how it all got started. he is now setting up shop in the basement.. designing a workbench and hanging pegboard and all. i can tell how much he's loving this, and that makes me love it! other than that, we are both cleaning out, shelving, and organizing. i'm even washing our pillows. (martha stewart says to do this twice a year.) i'm also working on an assignment that is still under wraps, but some of you will see it popping up in your mailboxes in the next few weeks.. i'll say more in september!

cornforlunch
lunch yesterday was just this. sweet corn. yumm! the perfect we-haven't-been-to-the-grocery-store-yet-but-we-did-go-to-the-farmers-market meal.
since then, we have been to two grocery stores, bread has been baked, and the fridge is full once more. thank you, Lord! it is so fun to be able to spend money on good food, especially when you've had a 2 month break from it. lots of other things are also fun when you've been away for 2 months.. the lighting in your bathroom, the depth of your cereal bowls, the speed of your internet.. it's all so wonderful!
these coming home from camp days are truly some of my favorites of the whole year. one, because school hasn't started yet and that means grant is around me all day. and two, because it's the middle of august! that is a magical time. the edge of summer. my mind is overflowing with thoughts of how to make the most of it. especially all the yummy foods. right now there are 12 ways to use tomatoes dancing in my head. i can't wait to make myself at home in my kitchen again. the meal ideas i've stocked up over june and july are burning a hole in my proverbial pocket. for instance, is it bad when baking bread comes before taking a shower?
anyway. the homecoming has been a sweet one, even if i did find ants in my baking cupboard. (don't worry. i'm on it.)
August 18, 2010
with a few hours in a car ahead of us, we couldn't load up on everything, but we were able to get a few treats. grant's pick was a glass of fresh oj, his favorite, and i got a jar of buckthorn honey from a local farm. according to the nice man who let me sample about 15 types of his honey, he had just harvested it this week! i was pretty excited about the whole deal and gladly stood at his table for a good 20 minutes. and to top it all off, my mother in law snatched a free basil plant for me! basil is my new love. taking some home was the perfect end to our trip.

ps. we're moving home from camp today! can't wait to get settled in, go on a big grocery shopping trip, and switch back to standard blogging. see you tomorrow!
coming from the small town scene, i had no idea that a farmers market could be like this. there were beautiful fruits, veggies, and flowers, certainly, but they also had handmade cheese, chocolates, squeezed-right-there orange juice, organic beans, fresh honey, and samples of grass-fed beef tenderloin! and a girl playing the violin. and they were giving away herbs. it was grand. i could have stayed forever, just to sample and smell and hunt for bargains. and take pictures, of course.

up next.. what came home with us.
i'm not in-the-know about baseball (and i don't have the stamina to pay attention for 9 innings), but i do know the sights and sounds of being at a stadium. immaculately mowed lines, a backdrop of skyscrapers, sold out seats, and the dizzying smell of mini donuts. i liked being in amongst the fans, in their city, on a twins gameday. you could sense that everyone was there for the same reason. and a storm made a spectacular end to the game. the rain drops looked like snowflakes under the stadium lights. what a sight.

while we were there, i got to see the mary tyler moore, had my first trip to trader joe's (yay!), ate chipotle twice, had a stroll in anthropologie, a free ride to Target Field on a cool bike courtesy of Target (i love Target), saw a twins game, walked the nicollet mall, hung out with family, and ran through the crowded city streets during a rainstorm at night. it was so fun. it didn't even feel like my life.. for a day.
tomorrow.. photos from target field and the best farmers market of my life!
August 14, 2010
i have been playing in the lake, doing laundry, killing ticks, running errands in town, eating chipotle, going on a mini road trip, getting autographs from professional football players, combing target clearance racks, making french toast, gopher hunting, soaking my swimming suit, watching batman and alice in wonderland, celebrating grant's birthday, browsing in thrift stores..
i think you get the point.
i've been busy with summertime. forgive me for being gone so long.
just a few more days of vacationing, and then things will get back to normal!
today i'm in minneapolis to meet up with family and see a Twins game at Target Field.
be back monday with pictures!

i always try to make our camp quarters a bit homey. this year i brought along grandma's quilt, the lamps from our nightstands, and the red clock from our kitchen.. but my favorite part was this pretty pedestal that's sitting on my desk. (thanks again, to my little sis for making it in pottery class!) i love it! it's the perfect place for my sunglasses and memory verses. it's been a bright spot in our bedroom all summer.

about this blog

Hello, I'm Summer. A people-loving introvert whose hope and life is in Jesus. His promises are my passion and my ministry is homelife. This blog is a place for me to write about everyday things. Especially food. My favorite thing to do is sit around a table, lingering over a long meal with good conversation. I live with my husband and our 2 littles. We like blizzards, thrifting, grammar, guacamole, cheerful hearts, nice manners, good movies, and making simple, real, nutrient-dense food.
