Hi guys. I'm getting on my magnesium soap box today. Did you know I'm in love with magnesium? Yeah, it's true. My love affair started after reading this post a few years ago, and now I'll tell anyone who will listen how great it is. You can read a little bit about it in this post where I shared my favorite supplements for pregnancy (but they're also my favorites when I'm not pregnant). In the past, magnesium has helped tame my morning sickness when I was pregnant with Casper, got my stress hormones under control after a rough birth recovery and tense first couple months as a new mom, relieved muscle aches in my upper back and calves (chiropractic care also helped with these), and now I have another cool story about how I've seen the healing properties of magnesium at work in my own body. Specifically in my teeth. I've been so excited about this and dying to post about it!

After Casper was born and about a week or two into heavy nursing, I noticed some gray spots developing on my teeth. I watched for several days, brushing and flossing a little fiercer each day, and saw the spots start to spread. They weren't anything you could brush away or dissolve with mouthwash. These were related to a mineral deficiency. I have struggled with a magnesium deficiency in the past and knew that I probably wasn't getting nearly enough now that I was nursing Casper and supplying his body with magnesium on top of my own. So, having read that magnesium remineralizes teeth, I immediately started supplementing with it from a couple different sources.

I love my Ancient Minerals magnesium oil, but with a brand new baby and not much time in the bathroom, it just didn't work to try to keep up with it daily. Instead, I started drinking a glass of Natural Calm magnesium powder every day and I also stirred in a full daily dose of Concentrace trace mineral drops. Within a few days of starting this new regimen, the gray spots on my teeth began to disappear. It was incredible. After a few weeks, the spots were gone. Now Casper is 9 weeks old, I've kept up with my magnesium drink daily, and the spots haven't returned. I had Grant study my teeth last night and he couldn't tell where they had been. Amazing! (Added bonus: magnesium relieves constipation! Let's just say, I haven't had to worry about it a bit. And any of you girls who have given birth know that's huge.)

So encouraged by the progress I was seeing with the magnesium supplementation, I decided that while I was at it, some oil pulling would be great for my teeth, not to mention my overall health. You can read about it here if you're interested, but basically oil pulling is as simple as putting a spoonful of coconut oil in your mouth and swishing it around for 5-20 minutes. Sort of like mouthwash, but for a longer amount of time. Then you spit it out into the garbage (do not swallow!) and rinse. It pulls toxins, viruses, plaque, bacteria, and yeasts out of your mouth and has countless other health benefits- a super cleansing, healing, and detoxifying little technique.

I committed to oil pulling first thing every morning (which is the most beneficial time to do it) for 10 minutes, for a week. Any longer than 10 minutes and I start to think it's too much work, so I don't bother doing it, and I figured I could stick with it if I knew it was just for a week. So, I did it. And honestly, I started seeing results on the first day. As the week went by, I noticed that my teeth were significantly whiter and more shiny! Since then I've happily swished oil around in my mouth every few days, knowing that it really does work.

Just wanted to share my excitement with any of you guys who might also be into this stuff. :)

Hey guys! Just wanted to share something good with you today. We love to eat fermented food (full of probiotics, like sauerkraut) at our house, but we also (even Hadley) take a probiotic supplement for gut and immune health. If you're shopping around for a probiotic supplement sometime soon, we've been taking this Organic 3 Gut Pro probiotic for about 8 months now and we love it! I love that this formula doesn't have any extra "stuff" in it, and we've really seen it go to work in our systems. No flu for us yet (thank you, Lord).

It's an investment in the beginning ($99 for a bottle), but you get 240 servings, so over time it's actually one of the best prices you can find for a really good quality probiotic. We're still on our first bottle, so that means it has cost us about $12.50 per month so far, and we aren't finished with it yet. I actually got the powder, instead of the capsules, because it's such a great deal. And that way all 3 of us can just dip in and get a spoonful- as small or as big as we need that day.

I spent a lot of time searching and shopping around for a good probiotic, and we've been so happy with this one. Hadley and I take our spoonfuls right away in the morning when we wake up, on an empty stomach, and usually wait a bit before we eat breakfast.

Girls. We need to talk. Last time I got my hair cut (a few weeks ago) I asked for a Malibu Treatment and it changed my world. They rub some gel in your hair, you sit under a dryer for awhile, wash it out, and poof! Awesome hair. Have you heard of this? Do you get it done? Let me enlighten those who are unfamiliar...

A MALIBU TREATMENT will remove excess buildup in your hair caused from hard water and water softeners. It strips calcium, iron, and impurities that are saturating your helpless strands.. sometimes making them look dull or change color.

I could tell a difference immediately! My hair was softer, shinier, and lighter. It amplified my natural highlights and made me excited about my untouched-tresses again. Oh, have I forgotten to tell you?? It's been over 2 years since I got any highlights! Maybe not a big deal.... but BIG DEAL. Right?! It's exciting and Grant loves it. He's always liked my darker side. I like it too, and now I feel like it's darker hair done right. Afraid to go natural? You should try it. I think it's the "in" thing right now, anyway. At least that's what I heard from Joey Maalouf.
The Malibu was $16 at my salon. Not bad, but I think I'm going to look into buying the product myself and just bring it with me next time I get a hair cut. I've heard you can do that?? Anyway, I highly recommend this for you guys next time you want to splurge at the salon.

Oh, and some of you guys were asking about my navy nail polish in this picture. It's Midnight Cami from Essie, and I got it here for about $6. I love it! I have a hard time spending money on polish, but this is my first bottle of Essie and I can tell you it's worth the extra buck.

babysoap

i am thinking back… back, back,
back before i had changed a diaper.. back to the last month of pregnancy.
i felt pretty prepared, (although now i know no one can ever be truly prepared for being a parent) but i was still unready as far as products. what would we need for a baby? what should we use on a baby's bod? and why isn't it in my house already?! i don't know if any of you are at this point, but after a bit of hunting around, i got hooked up with some products that i think are tops.

(scroll down to read bar description)
i emailed the lovely shop owner about which bar she recommends for babies, and she was super sweet! she told me about this castile option and we love it. very creamy, gentle, unscented, and doubles as shampoo. after 4 months, we're still on our first bar, so it's absolutely economical.

you should see all the shampoo/body bar options they have! i could go crazy there. i also bought bug spray from this awesome company over the summer. can't wait to buy from them again.

(scroll down to read description)
for $12 you get 50 of these drops. 50! this box is going to last us forever. it's so nice. and we haven't had a single diaper-area issue to report, so we are pretty happy about this purchase. here's what we do: put one drop in a cup of very hot water and let dissolve, then pour the solution over a stack of paper towels cut into thirds. boom! baby wipes. and you don't have to run to target when you're out! you can also use the solution on cloth wipes or in a spray bottle, but we like the throw-away option for now.

really, that's it for the day-to-day things. the only other products we've used so far are: California Baby super sensitive everyday, cradle clear lotion, and unrefined coconut oil. oh, and we use Charlie's Soap liquid laundry detergent. can't forget about that!

i've been super happy with everything, so just had to share with you guys.

about this blog

Hello, I'm Summer. A people-loving introvert whose hope and life is in Jesus. His promises are my passion and my ministry is homelife. This blog is a place for me to write about everyday things. Especially food. My favorite thing to do is sit around a table, lingering over a long meal with good conversation. I live with my husband and our 2 littles. We like blizzards, thrifting, grammar, guacamole, cheerful hearts, nice manners, good movies, and making simple, real, nutrient-dense food.
