these snowy-topped oatmeal crispies are a big harms favorite. and when i became a harms, they became a favorite with me. i love them! so, why the warning? apparently the pile of powdered sugar on top is famous for getting sucked to the back of your throat and making you cough like crazy. i received plenty of caution the first christmas i ever sank my teeth into one of these. yes sir, they're dangerous! and it makes us love them all the more. (but i've never had a powdered sugar attack in my experience of eating them.)

snowy oatmeal crispies

1 cup butter
1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup flour
dash of salt
1 1/2 cup oatmeal

about 2 cups powdered sugar for topping

mix first 3 ingredients together. add dry ingredients. chill 20-30 minutes.
use a medium or small cookie scoop to make dough balls.
flatten each dough ball with a flat-bottomed glass dipped in flour.
bake 8-10 min at 350 until edges just start to look golden.
pile a rounded T. of powdered sugar immediately on top of the cookie while it's still on the pan.
move the cookies with a spatula a bit so they don't stick to the pan as they cool.

makes 4 dozen. they freeze great!

for me, they're dangerous for a completely different reason. they're just too, too good. now that i've found them, i think i'll be needing these christmas crispies every year... forever.

Oh, I'm glad you posted this because I couldn't remember the real name of these cookies so I couldn't find the recipe! I only know them as suicide cookies, HA! Now I can make them again :)

Oh dear! I have everything needed for these at home right now. I've eaten all the gingerbread men and think I am dire need of cookies. I'm going to be forced to make these tonight. Since it's just me and the dog I hope I don't have any problems with them. She's not much help in a cookie emergency!
