i wasn't about to use 3 whole slices, but i really wanted a taste of
something savory, something simple, and something sweet.
so for lunch i had mini toast samplers. a bite of everything.
the third bite had turkey & honey mustard.
somehow it didn't make it to the photo shoot on time.
anyway, this resulted in me finding an old friend.
hello, strawberry jam. you're perfect. i don't use you enough.
every once in awhile i'll go through a phase where jam is my thing.
usually it's when we have really good toasting bread on hand.
like when we used to get loaves of nine grain from great harvest. mmm.
anyway, i think i'm entering another fruit spread chapter of my life.
which is especially convenient right now.
you see, i've made a new list.
a list of 20 things to do during the last 20 days before my birthday.
and eating less sugar is on the list. goodbye chocolate chips with my pretzels.
thankfully, i'm finding a piece of toast seems to help satisfy cravings.
and the jam is completely natural. fruit only. just goodness.
i figured going 20 days without sweets wouldn't be too bad.
difficult? sure. but fun, too.
at one point, when i was wedding-crazed, i did it for 2 months.
grant has gone 2 years before. yeah. have i mentioned that he's amazing?
he's a no fear, high pain tolerance, loads of self-discipline,
would like to go out into the wilderness & make it on his own kind of guy.
he doesn't need sugar. come on.
but me & sugar, we're tight.
we hang out everyday, especially after dinner.
and almost every time i socialize, sugar is invited.
sugar is always around for the major celebrations in my life, too.
the break up has been tough. and i'm only 6 days into it.
but this challenge is too short to not have fun.
it's like my own little game. and i make the rules.
and i'm pretty sure i'm going to win.
grant is my inspiration. he helps me say no.
but he never puts pressure on me. in fact, he builds me up.
and he says lovely things like, "with that physique, you should just enjoy food."
hearing that was enough sweetness for me last night. thank you, grant.
you make me feel so good.
so here's to eating healthier.
and remembering that the point is to feel good, not to get carried away.
i'm off to finish out the remaining 14 days. keep the toast coming.

'tis almost the season for making resolutions.
and I am ready.
Ever since I did some reading on the subject of faithfulness (see post), there is a constant stream of resolutions filling my head. Some are piling up haphazardly in my memory, some have been preserved in corners of my notebook that will be impossible to ever locate again, and all are on the verge of being forgotten lest I quick collect them all and jot them down here in this post.
Most of my intentions are about the small things. (not that there aren't big things I can work on too) Why do I hate to do things that are so simple and easy? I am hoping that by acknowledging them, I will be more aware of my problems and be able to overcome them.
1. put the annoying twistie-tie thing back on the bread bag
2. remember to take my vitamins
3. wash the greasy butter dish before putting in a new stick
4. use my nice stainless steel frying pan instead of the easier-to-clean non-stick one
5. put lotion on my legs and feet
6. put necklaces & earrings back in my jewelry box instead of leaving them on the bathroom counter for a week
7. use fewer kleenexes and paper towels
8. use less salt on my potatoes and less butter on my banana bread
9. clean the whole shower, not just the floor and faucet
10. buy better quality fabric softener
11. sit up straighter and sit back in my chair, instead of on the edge
12. don't procrastinate when it comes to clipping fingernails and toenails
13. clean off the top of the sticky syrup bottle
14. get a bookmark instead of folding corners in all my books
15. get a new trash bag instead of letting the old one overflow
16. get rid of some of the cardboard box supply in our house
17. don't use the laundry room as a room to store unsightly junk
18. put things in their right place right away, instead of letting them sit there while I think about putting them away
19. spend less time getting ready for bed
20. put in my new pair of contacts instead of trying to make these last forever

The school's in trouble.
They need a boys' basketball coach- and fast.
"Mr. Harms... will you do it?"
And in true Grant fashion, my heroic husband agrees to take the position.
(early morning practices start THIS monday!)
Now, when it comes to basketball, my husband's no novice. (oh, no. let's just say that a 3rd grader once asked him why he wasn't in the NBA.) But coaching?! If I were him, I would be scared to death. But not Grant. He's not worried. He's calm, cool, & collected. Not to mention distractingly handsome.
Grant, thank you for being fantastically brave and selfless, you inspire me.
You made a lot of 7th grade boys really happy.
And you make me happy everyday.

being faithful means being the girl who follows through. shows up. remains stable. keeps her commitments. keeps her word. gets it done. (and votes.)
i'm reading a book on this subject right now and liked how the author pinpoints the attitudes that keeps us from being faithful..
1. tiredness "i can't do it"
2. laziness "i don't want to do it"
3. hopelessness "it doesn't matter if i do it"
4. procrastination "i'll do it later"
5. rationalization "someone else will do it"
6. apathy "i don't care if i do it"
7. rebellion "i won't do it"
don't give in to these mindsets. whatever responsibilities you have today, just DO IT. no matter how trivial the task may seem. try it for an hour, a day, a week. do it. be faithful.
and in your haste to fulfill your every duty today, don't forget to vote.

I do not like rain.
but fall rainy days are different from any other kind of rainy day.
on a fall rainy day, you can enjoy lots of lovely things...
1. pumpkin spice latte at a local coffee shop.
(i had never had one before-- how is that possible?)
2. something warm and carb-loaded for dinner.
(i just made up a recipe for some kind of chili/chicken chowder... if it's good i'll let you know)
* this is my grandma's old crock pot which she just gave me. yay. thanks, grandma!
3. something carbohydratey to go with the already carb-loaded main dish.
i finally got up enough guts to try my grandma's recipe for dinner rolls. I hate calling them dinner rolls. That sounds so degrading. They should really be called "the most glorious thing you'll ever put in your mouth rolls." Hopefully they taste like Grandma's... we'll find out

about this blog

Hello, I'm Summer. A people-loving introvert whose hope and life is in Jesus. His promises are my passion and my ministry is homelife. This blog is a place for me to write about everyday things. Especially food. My favorite thing to do is sit around a table, lingering over a long meal with good conversation. I live with my husband and our 2 littles. We like blizzards, thrifting, grammar, guacamole, cheerful hearts, nice manners, good movies, and making simple, real, nutrient-dense food.

"If Christ be anything, He must be everything."
-C.H. Spurgeon
