Hey guys! So, last weekend I had the opportunity to speak at Camp Shetek's Ladies Camp event... which explains this mid-sentence photo that my mom snapped of me behind a podium. :) I'm sorry you have to see me looking unenthusiastic and kinda nervous, because it was such a great time and I don't think I stopped smiling all day. I got to talk about food! (you know how I love that.) I talked about the top 10 healthy choices our family makes; the things that we've learned or have put into practice in our household that really, honestly help us. It was really fun and I loved getting to chat with the ladies and my mom and sister (who made the long trip to be there) afterwards! I thought you guys might like to see my presentation also, so here are my slides and speech:

------------------------------------
Hi, I'm Summer Harms! (and this is my family - cue slide with our pictures on it) I get to talk to you about food today. Which I’m really excited about because I love food (obviously) and I love to cook and feeding my family is one of the biggest ways I show them that I love them. I was asked to speak about making healthy choices today, and was having such a hard time trying to nail down a particular topic under this umbrella. I just love it all! Then Grant suggested making a list of the 10 most practical, important things that we’ve learned or that I try to do for my family when it comes to food. I thought this was brilliant. I know I love hearing how other families get through 3 meals a day, so here's how we are doing it. Eating healthy is a lifestyle. And lifestyles are built on little things - the choices we make throughout the day and small changes here and there. So these are some of those little things that have helped our family, or that we’ve learned along the way as we try to be healthier eaters. I share these things not as an expert, just straight from our family’s experience, with the hope that there might be something in the mix that’s helpful to you.

1. If there’s junk in the house, we’ll eat it. So we don’t have junk in the house. Grant helps me with this one a lot because I’m easily tempted at the grocery store and he sticks to the list. We don’t buy much snack stuff at the store because we know we can make our own snacks and treats at home. That way we know exactly what’s going into our bodies and get the most nutrients out of our snacks. (Our favorites are homemade popcorn, bananas or apple slices and nut butter, pickles, nuts, chips and guacamole, homemade muffins or cookies, or trail mix.)

2. Fats are good. And use the good fats. Our brain is 60% fat and the fats we eat strongly influence our levels of brain function, as well as cellular health. Most processed foods contain the harmful kinds of fats, while healthy types of saturated fats provide a major source of energy, the building blocks for cell membranes, vital hormones, and they help your body absorb important vitamins, including A, D, and E. Coconut oil is our favorite for cooking and baking and we love olive oil for dressings and marinades. Just a few other good-for-you fats that we like are avocados, eggs from pastured hens, and grass fed meats. I know from experience that I feel a lot better when I’m eating enough good fats. When we first started eating less processed foods and having a lot more healthy saturated fat (specifically coconut oil), I noticed that I had more energy and better mental clarity, and felt more full and satisfied for a longer time after a meal.

3. Take a good probiotic and fermented food. Gut health is something that has been a really big deal for our family, because we’ve experienced tremendous health recovery benefits by focusing on cultivating good bacteria and forcing harmful bacteria out. You can tilt your balance toward the good bacteria simply by eating more of them, in the form of probiotics, which are live bacteria contained in foods and supplements. We take a strong probiotic supplement and also eat probiotic-rich fermented foods like sauerkraut and pickles and kombucha in order to boost the beneficial bacteria in our guts.

4. Say no to sugar. This is another big one that has dramatically improved how I feel in terms of overall wellness. We’ve learned to stop when we’ve had too much sugar, and try to view it as a treat. We also like to use sweeteners like honey, maple syrup, coconut sugar, or even just fruit to make things sweet, instead of using sugar. These alternatives are real foods found in nature that actually contain health-giving properties, where as sugar is so ultra processed that it is stripped of any nutrients. Not only that, but it’s extremely addicting, and it feeds the bad bacteria that live in our gut.

5. Be prepared. Have a plan for dinner- whatever that looks like at your house. At our house, we often have meat thawing in the fridge for tomorrow night’s dinner. When 5:30 rolls around, if there’s not a plan in place, it’s just way too easy to start eating whatever you can find fast. Don’t wait until you’re starving. Also, bringing snacks with you wherever you go has been a big help to us. If we have enough food with us to get by until we get home, we can avoid the drive-thru.

6. Quality foods. We love to know where our food is coming from. We buy organic produce whenever we can, we love to hit the farmers market as much as possible, and we switched to buying local grass-fed beef without hormones or antibiotics.

7. Don’t give up on something- and when in doubt, roast it.
A few years ago I found out that if I cut back on sugar, everything else started tasting better. Before that time, my tastebuds were so trained and dependent on sugar for flavor that I was a really picky eater. I didn’t even realize it at the time, but as my sugar dependency went down, I was so encouraged, because suddenly I started liking so many new things! And now it’s hard for me to find a vegetable that I don’t like- especially when it’s roasted. Roasted vegetables are the big favorite at our house. So if there’s a food or meal that you haven’t liked in the past, I want to encourage you: don’t give up on it. Try preparing it a few different ways- you never know if you’ll find a new favorite. For us, that was the case with brussels sprouts. We tried roasting them one night and now we can’t get enough of them!!

8. Read labels as you shop. If you can’t pronounce the ingredients, you should probably put it back. For me a “proper diet” means eating real food... wholesome, nutrient-dense foods that come from nature. The longer an ingredient list gets, the more likely it is to have undesirable stuff and the less likely it is to be nutrient rich. We try to buy things with as few ingredients as possible or single-ingredient food items like eggs, rice, apples, avocados, etc.

9. Make meals that stretch.  If you make dinner big enough, you can use it for lunch the next day. This one is kind of just common sense, but we just put it into practice this past school year and it made a huge difference. At my house, especially on week days, lunch often ends up being a scavenging kind of meal, unless there is something already made. Which is why having leftovers is perfect - it doesn’t get much easier than that. And planning one big meal always beats planning 2.

10. Have the right mindset. Know why you want to eat healthy. A healthy mindset about eating is just as important as the food you are choosing to eat - because eating matters to the Lord. Our motivation for eating well can be found right in 1 Corinthians 6:20: ”You have a body, but it is not yours. You were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”

I loved this quote from John Piper that I found the other day about Worshipping Christ through eating.

-Don’t think worship services when you think worship. That is a huge limitation which is not in the Bible. All of life is supposed to be worship. Take breakfast, for example, or midmorning snacks. 1 Corinthians 10:31 says, “Whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” Now eating and drinking are about as basic as you get. What could be more real and human?” You are always in a temple. Always worship. -John Piper

-What does worship look like when it comes to eating? It means getting the proper diet your body was designed by God to have. This is how we applaud and enjoy His design and understand that He made us stewards of these bodies. We honor Him when we take care of our bodies!

April 24, 2014

As I start out on a new year, I’m loving these radical thoughts:

If death were the end of the matter, what makes sense is middle-class moderation to maximize earthly pleasures. But it's not! Does the hope of the resurrection shape my life? Do I make decisions on the basis of gain in this world or gain in the next? Do I take risks for love’s sake that can only be explained as wise if there is a resurrection? — paraphrased from the Solid Joys app

I'm guilty of putting comfort as my priority so terribly often. I want my life to be more than this. More than maximizing earthly pleasures. I'm praying that my deepest delight will be found in Him- in loving Him, keeping His commands, and living like Jesus did.

Some birthday pics with my babies! Ohhh, their little faces. This is true life. And I love it. I'm keeping these forever and ever!

And a couple pics from the night time celebration with Daddy and cake and presents. Grant had class that night, but we still snuck in a quick candle-lighting before the kids went to bed. (Not pictured is the ice cream I ate after the kids were asleep.) And Hadley sang Happy Birthday to me all by herself!

April 22, 2014

I'm writing this on the eve of my birthday, because I'm not sure if there will be time to stop and jot it down tomorrow. The night before my birthday I like to straighten the house, empty the kitchen sink, fold my clothes neatly, and generally do all the things. I think it's my attempt at a "perfect" day- where all the work is done the night before. :) Birthdays just make me want to get all my affairs in order. Speaking of which, I want to record where I'm at in life right now. A real diary entry. I like to do this every year and always hope I can think of things that I will look back on and laugh about someday.

  • Right now I'm at the computer desk with a jar of almond butter and a banana.
  • I'm wearing yoga pants and a zip-up hoodie because that's my uniform.
  • My hair is in a pony tail and it's the longest it's ever been! No bangs, and not really any layers. My toe nails are blue.
  • I just got done trimming Grant's neck and now he's finishing the rest of his haircut.
  • It's 8:49 and my son (3 months) and daughter (2.8 years) are sleeping. They are my job and my joy. Somedays, it's easy to forget one or the other.
  • I'm listening to a playlist that's a mix of Andy McKee, Nat King Cole, and the soundtrack from the movie Sabrina, but I've really been loving John Mayer's older albums lately.
  • Our computer is humming at the moment because we're importing a bunch of old home videos from my childhood.
  • Signs of aging: I went to Target and only shopped the kids' clothes. I take magnesium, talk about retirement funds and life insurance with my husband, and I need new bath towels.
  • My birthday requests this year: coconut milk ice cream and a pair of jeans that fit me. Also, there will probably be a big bowl of guacamole while watching a movie with my favorite guy.
  • Plans for the near future: buy/borrow a baby carrier, go to the dentist, hang some stuff on our walls (finally!), and support Grant through his upcoming eye surgery and the busy month of May.
  • In the past year I think I've gotten better at: thawing meat in time for dinner.
  • In the next year I want to get better at: trusting Him, not getting angry, not judging, world geography.
  • I feel rich when: the fridge is loaded with avocados, my husband is home and his evening is free, the silverware drawer is full of clean forks and spoons, the promises of God are proven faithful in our life.
  • Guilty pleasures: long showers, good typography, negative space, uninterrupted time to do creative things, British dramas, the dark chocolate lover's bar from Trader Joe's, Parks and Recreation, word games, coconut oil on everything, the Oscars.
  • This is the latest picture of me. (Half of me, that is.) Casper and I took a nap together (which never happens) and I woke up first!
  • I'm currently reading 7 by Jen Hatmaker and loving it. I'm ready to start recycling and purging our house.
  • I've started keeping a quote book and it's filling up fast. There's a lot of John Piper in it already.
  • We don't have cable this year. And it's been great. How did we have time for it before?
  • I'm making this maple mustard chicken and these roasted Brussels sprouts for my birthday dinner.
  • We still only have one car -- the same car! It's been a blessing.
  • About Time is my favorite recently-seen movie.
  • We are planning on living and working at Camp Shetek again this summer! Actually, Grant will be the only one "on staff" this year, and I'll be full-time mom and wifey.
  • And lastly, but certainly the most powerful thing to note: Jesus. He is keeping me, teaching me, loving me. He has been made more real to me in this year. I love Him better than I did before, because I see that I need Him more, and more and more. Everyday, I need Him more. Jesus, keep on making me grow up in You. Let this be a year of Your glory.

Jeremiah 32:38-41 And they shall be my people, and I will be their God. I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear me forever, for their own good and the good of their children after them. I will make with them an everlasting covenant, that I will not turn away from doing good to them. And I will put the fear of me in their hearts, that they may not turn from me. I will rejoice in doing them good, and I will plant them in this land in faithfulness, with all my heart and all my soul.

Happy, happy birthday to my twin sister Haley! She is my first friend and one of the greatest gifts in my life. I love every thing about this girl and am so grateful I get to do life with her.

May 14, 2013

I just received this lovely gift from my mother-in-law for Mother's Day. A bottle of rosemary (find this scent if you haven't already!) Mrs. Meyer's dish soap. This is what luxury looks like to me. And it even smells like luxury, which, if you were not aware, smells uncannily like an Aveda salon. As I look at this bottle perched on my sink, it has me reminiscing about how Mrs. Meyer's started me blogging 5 years ago. Yes, it's true. Have I ever told you before? Here's the story of how I started blogging.

One sunny September morning, in the fall of 2008, a young bride woke up in her new (old, tiny, quirky) apartment. The young bride was me. A blonder, less foodie-fanatic version of me. After breakfast (probably a bowl of sugar cereal), I sat at our old iMac computer googling Mrs. Meyer's cleaning products. I was new in town, a rookie homemaker, and newly moved far-far-away from the place that has all the answers, aka, Target. I didn't really know where you find things outside of Target, or which store in our teeny town would carry Mrs. Meyer's, but maybe I could find it online somewhere. My recently acquired cleaning responsibilities in my very own home were thrilling to me and I was ready to take them seriously. Dreams of a fully stocked cleaning bucket danced in my head.

I clicked on the next link on the google results page, not knowing that it would lead me to a land sparkling with possibilities. On the other end of that link was... a blog. It was this very post in fact:

I don't know if I had ever truly seen and read a real live blog before that morning. But what I saw, I loved. I wanted in. It was a blog meant for someone like me, talking about things I was interested in or soon would be. I made plans to come back the next morning to read more. She promised pretty things updated daily, which sounded like an invitation. Count me in. Jordan Ferney's space (which had a different design back then) was neat, clean, and smart. I loved how she shared tidbits from her life and experience as she listed out things she liked. It had everything necessary to captivate and convince me that starting my own blog was not only essential, it was overdue. Time was wasting and creating a blog became the day's priority.

I think I had my little bend in the blog world set up by the time Grant came home from work that day. When he sat down at his desk I proudly announced, "Well, I started a blog today." And he probably said something like, "Really? What are you going to write about?"

Good question, Grant. I'm still figuring that one out day by day.

ps. It's funny how my relationship with blogs has morphed over the years, from being a faithful drop-in to a regular reader to making friends in the comment box to Google Reader to a handful of favorite must-reads. Nowadays, my blog reading time is much shorter and my comment voice has been reduced to a whisper. But I'm happy with all of that, and glad for the things I've gleaned from blogging and reading blogs over the years.

Hello friends! Want to read about me elsewhere today?! :)
The lovely people at Mommypage featured an interview with me! They asked me a few questions about my experience with the GAPS diet and eating gluten and (mostly) dairy free. I also talk about why I love cooking so much and share some of my favorite easy recipes. Come on over and see me!

And a few items of business to discuss...

1. Thank you so much for all the views yesterday after I announced the spring line-up in my tiny print shop! It was fun to make some lighthearted, playful kind of things for you guys. (I'm secretly hoping you'll want to decorate a corner of your house with one of them!) ;) I'm trying to decide which one to get myself. A friend emailed me yesterday telling me she knew right away which one was perfect for her and how awesome was it to hear that? Is there one that you connect with? I'd love to know! (you don't have to buy it!)

2. Yes, I'm still receiving and taking more orders for The 50 Promises memory cards. They will be available a bit longer yet, so feel free to grab a set! We are currently on Week 12 of this little game, if you're playing along.

3. I have lots of posts bobbing around in my head, so stay tuned for Tacos de Lengua, coconut pecan slab cookies, local dairy source found (!!), non-cereal breakfast ideas, and what I learned from reading Farmer Boy. Lots of good things to come!

January 21, 2013

I was tagged on instagram by the super fun Sheena Jibson (@thelittleredhouse) to play a game where you share a self-portrait and 5 things people don't know about you. I wanted to share my 5 with you, plus a few extras for fun. You guys know me pretty well. (How long have you been reading? I'm so curious!) So some of you might already know a couple of these things.

1. When I go to a movie, I play this game in my head where I try to guess who the composer is before I see the credits. (I love trivia.)
2. My baby was born at home.
3. I don't usually wear deodorant.
4. I really want to visit North and South Carolina.
5. I'm a nerd. I love Lord of the Rings and I still wear my retainer to bed every night.
6. Jobs I've had in my life so far: Cleaning houses, Local Swimming Pool "attendant"- not the lifeguard, but the person who gives you a wristband and tells you when it's your turn to go down the slide, Front Desk assistant at my orthodontist's office, Camp Shetek Kitchen Girl, Camp counselor (for one week), Research Desk receptionist at an allergy/asthma clinic, Preschool teaching assistant, Freelance blogger/graphic design/online shop
7. My get-ready-for-bed routine is way too long and I dread it. And I'm not one of those people who can skip it.
8. Grant and I didn't kiss until we were engaged. (Yes, I will write more of our dating story!)
9. I have flat feet and one knuckle that cracks. ONE. You'll see me crack my right thumb a lot.
10. Favorite smells: sunscreen, hotel smell, woodsmoke, hardware store smell, fresh basil, chlorinated pool, breakfast smells (coffee, burnt toast, blueberry muffins, fried eggs).
11. Sometimes my hands just go limp when I need to open a jar. My twin and I call this "dead hands."
12. I placed #1 in my state on a National French Exam.

You should play along too! And come follow me on instagram @summerharms

about this blog

Hello, I'm Summer. A people-loving introvert whose hope and life is in Jesus. His promises are my passion and my ministry is homelife. This blog is a place for me to write about everyday things. Especially food. My favorite thing to do is sit around a table, lingering over a long meal with good conversation. I live with my husband and our 2 littles. We like blizzards, thrifting, grammar, guacamole, cheerful hearts, nice manners, good movies, and making simple, real, nutrient-dense food.

"If Christ be anything, He must be everything."
