Hello, friends! Thank you all so much for the birthday wishes yesterday! I love being reminded of all the wonderful people in my life on my birthday. You guys are great. Thanks for reading and caring. I had a marvelous and cozy day, and the snowstorm was one of my favorite parts. So pretty and peaceful. Plus, Grant was sent home early from work because of the roads! Bonus.

In case you missed it, I'm offering a SALE this week: a custom designed blog header for only $15!!! Do you have a blog that you've been wanting to spruce up? I can help! I had a few orders come in for custom headers last night (thank you so much! I'm so excited to get started!) and a couple people emailed to ask me how the whole process will work. Yes. Great question! So I'm here to answer that for anyone who might be interested today. I also have posted below a few examples of headers -and a couple logos- that I've designed earlier this spring. Hope they might help you get an idea of things you like/don't like/possibilities for your own space.

Ok, here's how it would work.

1. You send me an email (summer.harms@gmail.com) letting me know that you're interested in a brand new look for your blog.
2. I will write you back (probably very quickly, I check my email like 200 times a day) and say "Yay! Let's get started." :) And then I'll ask you these questions.

  • What colors do you like? Feel free to be specific.
  • What kind of style are you interested in for your header? Minimalistic/fancy and elegant/colorful and fun/simple and clean/bold/modern/vintage/quirky/ etc. Your header sets the tone of your entire blog, so if you have a vision for your space or you know you want it to "feel" a certain way, please tell me!
  • What size would you like it to be? (I just need to know how many pixels wide to create it.)
  • What is your blog url?

3. You send me your answers and I'll send you a paypal invoice for the $15. I'll start designing a handful of options for you. I'll email the options to you to see what you think, ask if you have a preference, and then you have the freedom to ask for any changes you want! We'll email back and forth until we get it just the way you want it.
4. You put your new blog header in place and when you are perfectly happy with it, we're all done! I'll be here if you need any adjustments, or anything at all. Doesn't it sound so fun?! It really is. I've loved everyone I've worked with.

You could be next! :)

Hi guys! Hope you're having a great weekend! Just wanted to stop in real quick this morning because I've been playing around and think I found a better way to get The 50 Promises list to you. The print was so tiny before! Here it is in a pdf for you to download and print. Please let me know if it works for you!

Yesterday I got to take some food to a friend who just had a baby! It was so fun. It's the kind of thing that I feel like I could do all the time, now that I've just got some practice. Do you ever do dinner deliveries? What do you like to make for them? I made rosemary chicken with garlic potatoes and carrots. I also packed a pineapple, some kiwi, and a jar of my cilantro rice salad, because I know she likes it. :) My mom always takes a hot pizza when she brings a meal to someone! I love that tradition.

I was so glad to get a chance to talk with my sweet friend. Connecting with brand new moms is one of my most favorite things. I crave it. I have such a heart for them! Any new mamas out there reading today? I just want them all to know that they're not alone. God is faithful. Don't lose hope, trust in Him, things will get better. The first couple months after my baby was born were tough. (of course/needless to say/duh/what did you expect?) The mental recovery took a long time. I don't think I had postpartum depression, but I do feel like I had a case of postpartum... despair.

Here's where I went wrong: I was not ready to do battle. Yes, I was exhausted, hormonal, nursing, and healing, all of which are simply going to be harder than you expect. (I was also away from home and without a true bathroom, which was also way harder than I expected.) But more than that, my mind was overcome. I wasn't fighting Satan for control of my thoughts. I didn't have peace. I felt so weak. The Enemy likes to H.I.T. us when we're down: when we're hungry, isolated, and tired is when we need to be especially watchful of his schemes... which is exactly what every new mom is, all the time! He'd love nothing more than to get her feeling like the change is too much, feeling hopeless, lonely, worried, bitter, empty, envious, scared, and misunderstood.

It took me a long time to feel like myself again, but the Lord broke through my perilous thoughts and brought peace. That time is so dear to me because when I think about it, I'm still amazed at how He sustained me through it. When I think how do I know that He is a faithful God? how has He been faithful to ME? I can look back to my first summer as a mom and see it firsthand. He alone upheld me.  One morning that summer, the Lord brought this passage to me. He used it to speak directly to my heart. I can remember it; a rare moment when my baby was sleeping, sitting alone at a table in the sun, bible open in front of me, tears coming down under my sunglasses as I read it. These are the verses that I claim and cling to.

When my soul was embittered,
when I was pricked in heart,
I was brutish and ignorant;
I was like a beast toward you.

Nevertheless, I am continually with you;
You hold my right hand.
You guide me with your counsel,
and afterward you will receive me to glory.
Whom have I in heaven but you?
And there is nothing on earth
that I desire besides you.

My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart
and my portion forever.
psalm 73: 21-26

Dear new mom, if your flesh and heart are failing today, I understand. If you're feeling stressed out and trying so desperately to keep up appearances, I get it. I'm praying for you! If you are hungry, isolated, and tired, fight for your thoughts! Trust in the Lord and let Him be your strength!

I'm back.

If you'll have me, that is. I owe you all a big, sheepish apology for totally bailing on the blog this spring! Don't fret, we're not out on the streets or mysteriously in quarantine or helplessly without internet. All is well! We're great. I don't pretend that my little stories here make or break your blog roll, but some of you have been telling me that you've been checking in every day for the past couple months! Wow. I love you for that. I don't take it lightly. Really, it's a privilege to be missed and cared about. Thank you so much. You are such dear people. Thanks for still talking to me, because I have to admit, I'm kinda scared I may have lost some friends!

(Seriously, though. I have missed you crazy. Are we still friends?)

So here I am and thrilled about it! I even have a new look to get us officially reinstalled and onto a new chapter of the blog. I hope you like it.

Sincerely, excitedly, familiarly yours,
Summer Elizabeth Harms

ps. let's catch up in the next post, okay?

asking

can you talk more about Hadley? you are so sweet. thanks for caring. i feel like there are so many people that already love my little girl. she is shooting me a smile as i type this, just so you know. we'll say it's for all of you :) so, honestly, i could talk non-stop about miss Hadley. but i have been keeping the spotlight soft as Grant and i decide how much exposure we want her to have. it's just a personal thing. i will be sharing bits and pieces about her i'm sure, but we are still figuring out what feels like it belongs on the blog, and what belongs with us. i know you guys understand, because you are great like that.

Hadley actually has her own blog now! it's a private one, just a little spot for us to stash photos, videos, and leave her notes and document little things like today we read goodnight moon for the first time. it's so nice that we live in a time where there are such things as blogs. i would never get anywhere with a baby book. i don't even get photos developed anymore.

are you going to post your birth story? the answer is yes! i know, i love hearing how other girls experience the biggest event ever. and i am excited to tell you what it was like for me! the reason you've been waiting so long is two-fold: 1. i've been afraid to tackle it! birth is huge. and personal. knowing what to say and how to mold it into a post is tricky! 2. a story takes time. something i am not rich in right now. it also takes concentration.. a little hard to come by also :) but don't worry, i'm working on it! i've already got the timeline all written up.

any more questions for me? ask away! leave them in my comment box or send me a formspring :)

about this blog

Hello, I'm Summer. A people-loving introvert whose hope and life is in Jesus. His promises are my passion and my ministry is homelife. This blog is a place for me to write about everyday things. Especially food. My favorite thing to do is sit around a table, lingering over a long meal with good conversation. I live with my husband and our 2 littles. We like blizzards, thrifting, grammar, guacamole, cheerful hearts, nice manners, good movies, and making simple, real, nutrient-dense food.

"If Christ be anything, He must be everything."
