"After all," Anne had said to Marilla once,
"I believe the nicest and sweetest days are not
those on which anything very splendid
or wonderful or exciting happens
but just those that bring simple little pleasures,
following one another softly,
like pearls slipping off a string."

This summer I've been reading Anne of Green Gables. How have I not read Anne of Green Gables until this summer?!! Growing up, it was my favorite thing to borrow from the library-- in VHS form, that is. I remember trying to read the books long ago, and not being very into it. Well. If that was you, too, I say try, try again. It's so loveable. (and it's free in iBooks!)

Back in June, my sister-in-law told me she was starting it and since then we've both been plowing through the series. It's kind of been our thing all summer. This was us everyday at camp:
"What are you going to do this afternoon?" (during nap time)
"Probably read Anne until I fall asleep."
"Yeah. Me too."

I can't wait to read it again with Hadley someday. The way Lucy Maud writes is wonderful, she is so clever with characters. You better watch out because half the time I feel like quoting Anne all over this blog...

at deer hunting, the girls usually do something girly. one year we made mini scrapbooks. last year grandma marian gave us all a class on her blue ribbon apple pie. this year, we got to make sweet cake stands! you know i was super excited about this. they're so simple-quick and practical. all of us girls were saying how much we love a 5-minute craft, especially one that you can actually use. i'm so hooked on the ease of it that i might just be making hundreds in the next few weeks. seriously, they would make such fabulous christmas gifts.

stackedstands

what you need:
1. one pretty plate, as fancy or plain as you please.
2. one small vase, candlestick holder, or goblet.
3. a strong glue that says it works on glass or metal.

fyi: our plates and bases came from thrift stores. (where else?!)

what you do:
1. turn your plate upside down.
2. squeeze a ring of glue onto the rim of your base, and place in the center of your plate.
3. let dry. don't move your stand until the base is completely secured to the plate.

madecakestands

make a few and stack them on top of each other for a tiered look. use them to serve your holiday goodies. or as a stand for candles and garland. or create an elegant centerpiece. or even better.. wrap them up and put them under the tree for all your favorite girlies!

ps. have you started your christmas shopping yet?

haleyshower
this was such a pink weekend, and i loved every girlie minute of it. my lovely aunt threw haley the sweetest shower on saturday. doesn't she look positively glowing? it was fantastic to be in a room full of girls and gifts and pink packaging. (girls, i wish i had 5 more hours to catch up with each of you.) we had a ball, and lots of giggling to prove it. and to top it all off, we ate big slices of the best chocolate cake i've ever tasted. hello, ganache. my new weakness.
and as for today, i'm..
unpacking. laundering.
trying to jump into the swing of things.
in need of a workout and a shower.
thankful for my sweet family and a chance to see them.

easterhairpins
..and i made these hairpins to go with my easter outfit. because i fell in love with my fabric and because winter-blonde hair sometimes needs spicing up. they're so super easy! want to know how? sorry, no photos for my mini tutorial, it was a spontaneous moment of craftiness.
1. cut a piece of fabric about 8 in. long x 1 in wide.
2. fold in half lengthwise and press to get a crisp edge.
3. cut a small circle of same fabric (about the size of a nickel) for a backing.
4. twist folded fabric between your fingers as you wind it into a circle. keep twisting. and winding.
5. once it is all wound up, glue onto backing. add glue where necessary to keep things in place.
6. glue onto a bobbypin. stick it in and feel good about your awkward-length hair.
so about this skirt thing.
you guys made my day! an endless supply of encouragement comes streaming through here, and i thank you for it. i just never would've thought.. me, sewing. but having this space, you guys, and all manner of connections in blogland, (plus a husband who think it's cool) has sparked something in me. sewing is now exciting. thank you for this.
and about my cardigan.
which i am devoted to. the 3/4 sleeve is my boon companion. (truly, it never seems warm enough to wear a tanktop to any place with air conditioning, no matter what time of year.) i found it a couple years ago at, of course, target. but knowing the champ of a store target is, i bet you can find something similar there now. they always seem to be well-stocked in wardrobe staples.

about this blog

Hello, I'm Summer. A people-loving introvert whose hope and life is in Jesus. His promises are my passion and my ministry is homelife. This blog is a place for me to write about everyday things. Especially food. My favorite thing to do is sit around a table, lingering over a long meal with good conversation. I live with my husband and our 2 littles. We like blizzards, thrifting, grammar, guacamole, cheerful hearts, nice manners, good movies, and making simple, real, nutrient-dense food.

"If Christ be anything, He must be everything."
