amazonbaby

are you other mommys-to-be on this? i am! come and join me! it's seriously soooo nice. granted, we live in tiny town, USA and have very (very) limited shopping. and target is hours away. so...... amazon feels like you just handed me the sun, the moon, and the stars.

but anyway, i'm loving it because:
you don't have to roam the store with a plastic gun, feeling like every decision is the biggest one you've ever made, and get worn out after one aisle. (tell me i'm not the only one that feels this way.)
you can sit on your couch. and browse blogs when you are tired of comparing car seats.
they do that nice 10% completion discount thing. really nice.
they do "universal registry", so i've been adding things to my wish list from any site. anywhere!
they have a super nice thank you list that tracks who has bought things for you.
and amazon gift cards. from $0.01- $5,000. straight cash, homey. money in your baby piggy bank.

just thought you ought to know. it's out there, and it's awesome.
i already have a thank you to write!! how exciting. and while we're on the subject, please tell me,

what did you register for that you're really glad about now? or, what gift were you given that you couldn't live without?

grant is going to love that i quoted randy moss in this post.
if you can tell me where i quoted him, you win.

toystory3
go see Toy Story 3.
seriously. nothing beats a good, clean, kid-movie-that's-written-for-adults.
the camp shetek staff, most of us first generation Toy Story kids, saw it on opening night. and we went crazy over it. it may the best one yet. grant says he's never left a theatre so happy with the movie he just saw. i laughed, i cried, i wished my dad had been watching it with me because i know exactly the parts he'd be laughing at. i'm so happy it ended on a good note!
for those of you who remember the novelty of the first one, you're going to love the final chapter.

favorite commercial ever? maybe.
'pure imagination' is my shower song. if i sing in the shower, this is the song i inevitably pick to sing. it's been that way for years. i should really learn all of the words at some point.
haley, i want to watch this with you and laugh at the purple monster's mouth at 0:34.

napkins2
my latest thrift. two sets of spearminty green napkins (14 total) and a teeny tiny pitcher, which i plan on using for maple syrup. all for $5. my heart skipped a beat as i carried them home.
on a different note..
chances are, you've seen this sweet little stop-motion kindle commercial. and if you're like me, you wondered where to get that charming song. good news.. you can download it for free right here! i'm listening to it all day. go get it! it's even better in full. can't wait for more little & ashley.

easterhairpins
..and i made these hairpins to go with my easter outfit. because i fell in love with my fabric and because winter-blonde hair sometimes needs spicing up. they're so super easy! want to know how? sorry, no photos for my mini tutorial, it was a spontaneous moment of craftiness.
1. cut a piece of fabric about 8 in. long x 1 in wide.
2. fold in half lengthwise and press to get a crisp edge.
3. cut a small circle of same fabric (about the size of a nickel) for a backing.
4. twist folded fabric between your fingers as you wind it into a circle. keep twisting. and winding.
5. once it is all wound up, glue onto backing. add glue where necessary to keep things in place.
6. glue onto a bobbypin. stick it in and feel good about your awkward-length hair.
so about this skirt thing.
you guys made my day! an endless supply of encouragement comes streaming through here, and i thank you for it. i just never would've thought.. me, sewing. but having this space, you guys, and all manner of connections in blogland, (plus a husband who think it's cool) has sparked something in me. sewing is now exciting. thank you for this.
and about my cardigan.
which i am devoted to. the 3/4 sleeve is my boon companion. (truly, it never seems warm enough to wear a tanktop to any place with air conditioning, no matter what time of year.) i found it a couple years ago at, of course, target. but knowing the champ of a store target is, i bet you can find something similar there now. they always seem to be well-stocked in wardrobe staples.

homefarming
new things. old things.
1. basil seeds in a box of triscuits?! cool. gardening & farming must truly be in now. call me a trendoid (just found this word. it's for real!), but i'm totally sucked in. all of you who have gardens and know how to work them: i'm jealous. do check out their slick site. i like the charming little crop guide.
2. grant and i spent a good chunk of our night watching justin bieber videos on youtube, trying to find the ones that got him 'discovered.' and now we're completely hooked on his new song. it's climbing the charts.. better go have a listen.
3. so, hulu dumped arrested development. or at least parts of it. did you notice? we did. but starting today.. it's streaming to you via netflix. yes. time to watch the bluth story all over again.
4. my camera. you guys have been asking about it! i shoot with a canon rebel xsi, and although it's not new (i got it in the fall of '08) i am trying some new things with it lately. thank you for noticing and all the kind words! you're awfully sweet.

fingerpeeler
so it's friday again! the sun is shining and our tax refund is in. and hey! this show starts tonight. i'm excited. other excitement: i put this book and this one on hold at the library. i love the library.
the orange brigade is in full swing here. orange pancakes, orange yogurt bread, orange juice.. ohh, the juice. i've never had anything like it. sidenote: i picked up this handy citrus peeler ring the other day. you can get it at the grocery store for under $2. it's fun, but pulling works just as well.
am kicking myself out of the kitchen today. absolutely no baking. must learn to sew. this pattern has me all jumpy with excitement and nerves. i'm nearly sweating. but first: something with straight lines and no elastic. wish me luck.
and in the soontime.. brioche! brioche. by my own hands! and do you know what? it's not even hard. you'll see. next week--be there. happy weekend!

mrrogers
everyday during playtime, our li'l students take turns at the computer. they love pbskids.org. if you wanted to know what's hip in the world of 4-year-olds, their favorites are curious george and martha speaks, but they've also recently discovered the mister rogers section of the site. i'm super excited about this! i love hearing all the familiar sounds as they click around. you can even explore the neighborhood of make-believe and hear the trolley tune! the kids don't know how cool this is, but i do.
did you grow up watching mister rogers' neighborhood, too? and did you know that march 20th is won't you be my neighbor day? the preschoolers keep me in the loop on things like this. so tomorrow the all-time favorite episode is going to be announced. you can still go to the voting page and check out full episodes.. like the one where they show how people make crayons! hop over and take a trip down memory lane.
in other news, happy friday! grant and i are meeting the hub club tonight for burgers, then smoothies and a game of acquire at our house. woohoo. thanks to acquire, i can honestly say i have a favorite board game. i see tiny flecks of snow on the air this morning. but i'm hoping this is just a brief relapse. spring tomorrow! and we have appointments with the eye doctor and plans to shop for fabric and seed packets to celebrate.
March 9, 2010

i had to make one more movie mention this month. i had to. i owe it to my twin sister. the parent trap is on today! this opening song is full of nostalgia for me.. it makes me homesick for my sisters. when we were little, this movie seemed magical. and it was one of our top 5 standards on the library vhs shelf. we used to watch miss hayley relentlessly. i'm guessing we still have most of the movie memorized, and can probably still do a decent rendition of let's get together.

{haley, remember the haircut scene? and the popsicle line? i don't know if i ever told you this, but in the back of my mind i always knew you were susan, and i was sharon. knowing us, you were probably thinking the same thing.}

my old favorite is showing at 4:45 this afternoon on tcm.
synchronize your dvrs, everyone.

meanwhile, i'm off to scrub saucepans and bake zucchini bread. i love starting the business of baking with clean counters and an empty sink. have i told you my idea to make tuesday 'baking day'? i am intent on it. today the sky is perfectly white and gloomy, and it's raining. i can't imagine a better place to be than in my kitchen.
March 5, 2010
i'm not here to rave about powerade, but i do like the sound of their new commercial. you know that i broke out my rock the planet: dance 80's album after i heard it. and now i find myself treadmill-trotting with nu shooz and the go-go's.
what are you working out to nowadays?
ps. the song in the commercial is 'i can't wait' by nu shooz.

sbfsb
how about this for the march classic movie of the month? this oscar-winning film could be the ultimate musical. for those who've seen it, tell me you didn't pick out your favorite brother and bride. admit it, you wanted to be that girl.. you dreamt of wearing her gingham dress and being swept around a barnfloor in his arms. and if you haven't seen it, watch and pick your favorite couple tonight on tcm!
truly, seven brides is right up there with the music man and singin' in the rain. among the greats, and maybe even my favorite. grant and i both grew up singing along with it (one of us camped out on the carpet of her cousins' basement, because she didn't own the movie herself), and now we refer to it as the movie that brought us together. it holds a special place in our lives.
after all, it was during the annual camp shetek staff
showing of seven brides for seven brothers
that grant first asked me on a date.

i didn't know this was a thing until yesterday, when i read about it over here. (thank you, thank you!) so now i'm here to spread the good news. grant says we'll go a-hunting for it at walmart.

emma
tonight is all about me, grant, and miss emma woodhouse. i'm such a luckie to have a husband who watches jane austen with me. i consider him all the more gallant and sophisticated for it.
does pbs masterpiece classic suddenly seem cooler than ever? i will be tuning in all winter long for their jane austen miniseries. and if you missed the first episode of emma from last week, you can watch the whole thing here.

ipad
just got done watching the video about the new 'magical' item from apple. we haven't made up our minds about it yet. it sure is eye candyish with its dazzling screen and super-thin size. but we still want to know if you can run normal computer applications on it like iwork and photoshop. also, personally, it would be hard to get over the lack of anything mouselike for my fingers. but they talk like this is going to revolutionize everything, so if the iPad is what's next, maybe i just need to get with the times.

we'll call this the classic movie of the month, and we'll see if another one pops up next month. there's a good chance of that happening now that i'm keeping tabs on the turner classic movies schedule and dvr'ing everything that intrigues me. have i told you? old movies are my fetish.
don't miss seeing our man jimmy stewart in this earliest you've got mail story. tomorrow. 3 pm. the shop around the corner. record it and save for valentine's day. or watch this weekend while your husband is at class.
ps. and if you're in the mood for a cutesy cary grant, you can catch operation petticoat on saturday. a goodie. and bonus.. co-starring tony curtis.
January 19, 2010
today i could talk about any number of things.
how the vikings are one game away from superbowldom. how sidney rice and brett farve are the best combo since pb and j. how we finally put the christmas stuff away over the weekend. how today's cookie of the day looks like a keeper. how i'm on day 4 of a lousy cold. how jack bauer is back. how my february issue of martha is especially dog-eared and bursting with yummy recipes like chicken parmigiana, classic white bread four ways, broccoli and pasta casseroles, croque-monsieurs, and chocolate truffles. how much i'm enjoying julia child in france. how in the dead of winter, there are still flies buzzing around my house. how all manner of clever things are stirring in blog..
a valentine. i'd love to slurp through a barber shop straw. anyone know where to find one?
a throw-together birthday party that looks put-together.
a little way to help haiti.
a wall of super snowflakes.
a poppy seed lemon cake. currently my favorite flave.

frasier fir
i like stopping in the restroom at other people's houses. first of all, that room gives me an excuse to wash my hands, and i'm always looking for chances to do that. i'm obsessive about it. i love to warm my icy fingers under scalding water.
secondly, i love using other people's bathrooms to study their soap. grandma marian's bathroom totally wins best soap. it's thymes frasier fir and really, this stuff is tops. so fresh and woodsy. if i were going to spoil my new bathrooms for christmas, i would load them up with these terrific suds. and maybe get a little candle so the living room isn't left out.
we're still in snowglobe mode here. i think a storm might be a swirlin. i'm sure there's snowday gossip making the rounds at grant's school and the janitor is probably boasting about getting 'the worst storm in years' and all that classic winter weather chatter. grant emailed me to say that we're even at level watch the news for school closings before bed tonight. woohoo. i love me a little snowday action.

hey everyone, remember the tea towel that was hanging on my oven door (you know, the one that needs to be ironed?) if you liked it, mom got it for me last christmas from this crafty shop. normally i don't prefer things hanging from my door handle, but in this case, i made an exception. the vintage ornaments are totally up my alley, and those colors are killer eye candy.

dvr2
twice a day, two days in a row, guys. i hope you can keep up with me. it's gonna be hoppin' around here if things keep up. i've got posts out the wazoo.
so here's a fresh batch of decemberness to unload on you: have you been catching all the christmas specials on tv? because you know that i have. and i've been recording them on, get this, our new dvr. another luxury that came with the new house! a year of free dvr, baby. this is a wide world of wonder to me; all my christmas favorites niftily stored away for me to enjoy while curling ribbons and placing 2-inch strips of satin gift wrap tape. cool.
because i adore them so much and want you all to watch these christmas greats with me, and because i've already done the research, i've made up a little reminder card for some of the big pictures. just for you! i gave the date, the name, and the channel, and i'm counting on you to look up the proper time for your zone. (fyi, 'abcf' = abc family) i'll be sipping hot chocolate and thinking of you when i press play on dr. seuss' how the grinch stole christmas. it was on earlier this week.. hope you didn't miss.
sidenote.. if you're going to be around, be sure to drop by over the weekend. i'll simply have to start doing saturday and sunday supplements in order to give this jolly season it's proper due.

about this blog

Hello, I'm Summer. A people-loving introvert whose hope and life is in Jesus. His promises are my passion and my ministry is homelife. This blog is a place for me to write about everyday things. Especially food. My favorite thing to do is sit around a table, lingering over a long meal with good conversation. I live with my husband and our 2 littles. We like blizzards, thrifting, grammar, guacamole, cheerful hearts, nice manners, good movies, and making simple, real, nutrient-dense food.
