Heyyyyy everybody! It's so good to be back with you!! So, if you follow me on instagram you might have an idea of what's going on with us lately, but here are some updates.

photo 1. Welcome to CAMP! Camp began for us on Father's Day. Our first batch of campers arrived last Sunday and left on Friday, then we had a Ladies Camp event over the weekend, and our second busload of campers arrived last night. So, we're on week 2 already and getting into the swing of things.
photo 2. There are so many people here. We're having to really brainstorm to figure out how to fit everyone. It's a really exciting problem to have! Praise the Lord that Camp Shetek is bursting at the seams each summer. :)
photo 3. Grant hanging out with his fellow Maintenance Men. I'm so thankful that he gets to work with such awesome friends here- and the fact that he has been able to get back to work at all! His eye is doing much, much better, praise the Lord! And thank you for praying! Although we are still having to wait to find out about any permanent damage. It does look like a cataract has formed so his vision is not normal right now, and his pupil is still very dilated. Time will tell what action we'll need to take, if any, to fix things up.
photo 4. Lake Shetek, where the sky is always more blue than the water. (we all joke about how green the water is here) We haven't been out swimming or on the jet ski yet, but it's only June.
photo 5. On June 16, Hadley turned two!!! Can you believe that?!

On to finally telling you a bit about our vacation in Washington DC...
We loved it!! The sun was out, it was like 90 degrees, the sights were amazing, and Hadley did awesome. We walked miles and miles and rode hundreds of escalators and grabbed good seats on the metro because we always had a stroller. It was great. My top 5 favorite things were:
1. Arlington Cemetery
2. The Holocaust Museum
3. Mount Vernon
4. Ford's Theater
5. The Archives

For food, my favorite stop was a slice of pepperoni with a root beer at We, The Pizza on Capitol Hill and homemade pickles from a stand at the Eastern Market. :)
And as promised, here's a little recap video of our Washington DC trip!

i hope you all have seen the masterpiece that is three amigos. it's one of our faves, for grant especially. a few weeks ago, grant and his two faithful maintenance amigos worked up a little tribute to this comedy classic. enjoy. and happy friday!
i'll be spending the weekend saying goodbye to some staff and gearing up for one more big week of camp!

a bit of camp news for today..
my husband and his fellow maintenance men produced a little something for the 2010 season, in keeping with their music video tradition. it's by far one of the biggest hits at skit night every week. the campers go crazy for these guys. they love to be cheesy, and the whole camp loves to watch them. of course, every video and joke is better when you know the Men in real life, but nonetheless, this is pretty awesome. enjoy.

a li'l video for friday. the musical maintenance men strike again. it was a big hit @ skit night.

i'm sorry, this is not the next installment of my tale.
but thanks to you, i am all psyched up to keep writing it out.
thank you very, very, very much for your sweet comments.
thank you for going the extra mile. making the extra click.
they blew me away. you are all so encouraging.
how fun to find that you like hearing my humble story.
i am thrilled to have more to share with you.
the hard part is getting it all condensed into post-form.
i started out wanting to give you the scoop on camp shetek,
but grant is such a huge part of my camp story, that it's
also become the beginning of my love storyline.
please bear with me as i keep trying & keep typing until i get it all out.
must decide how i want to go about this.
finish the camp story, minus lovey dovey stuff?
a separate romance series? or just throw it all together?
well, however the story ends up surfacing, it will all surface, eventually.
i'm so happy & caught up with my new writing task.
i feel like the memories are all stirred up. they're fresh in my mind.
i have to get every word out or i'm just going to burst.
this is so good for me. i've always wanted to document this stuff.
without really realizing it, i took the plunge with my last post. no turning back now.
even if it turns into a long-term project, i'm really going to write my story.
thanks again for your enthusiasm. you gave me the little push i needed.
and now back to this post..
here's another reason why i love this camp.
these campers thought they were doing some new stretches
during morning calisthenics. what they didn't know was that they
had learned the dance from michael jackson's beat it music video.
and that's how we roll at camp shetek.
ps. disregard the term "monologue" in the title.
there's no speech involved. just a little inside joke.

maintenance men comedy & creativity in its truest form; the music video.
the men & my own leading man are back, with another musical rendition.
newsies-style. performance by.. grant, graham, ryan, sam, bryant, & jared.
to get the story on the men & see the first m.m. music video, click here.
ps. grant & i had been dating for about a week when they filmed this.
pps. the "father" who pops up is the camp director & my father-in-law, steve.

... he could be in a musical.
that's right, my guy can sing.
not only can he sing, he makes a mean music video.
but before you press play, i should give you a little history behind this video.
at Camp Shetek (where we work in the summertime), there are two main groups of staff: the kitchen girls & the maintenance men. grant's title is head maintenance man. the camp shetek maintenance men are an elite group. believe me, the girl campers swoon over these rugged & sun-tanned boys.
they mow & trim, they drive the jet ski, they'll help your team in the hoccer tournament, they do mail call; they do it all. a few years ago, the maintenance men made a video for some skit night entertainment, and a tradition was born. their music videos have become one of the most looked-forward-to aspects of a week at camp shetek.
the campers love these Men; they admire them, take pictures of them & giggle at all their jokes. basically, the Men are the camp celebrities. i feel privileged to know them & call one of them my husband.
here is your first taste of their work, an adapted rendition of part of your world from the little mermaid, complete with minnesota accents. sit back & watch the maintenance men burst into song as they confess their hearts' true desire.
performed by grant, graham, ryan, & jared

about this blog

Hello, I'm Summer. A people-loving introvert whose hope and life is in Jesus. His promises are my passion and my ministry is homelife. This blog is a place for me to write about everyday things. Especially food. My favorite thing to do is sit around a table, lingering over a long meal with good conversation. I live with my husband and our 2 littles. We like blizzards, thrifting, grammar, guacamole, cheerful hearts, nice manners, good movies, and making simple, real, nutrient-dense food.
