natkingduo

when i hear nat king cole, i think of hanging out in my bedroom in 4th grade.

i was a strange kid.

i had a vintage schooldesk in my room that i thought was the coolest. and i loved to sit there and write in my planner (4th graders need planners?) with a rainbow assortment of highlighters, and listen to nat king cole. i loved that my bed was made. always. i loved my mini blinds. i loved that part of my window was blocked by the slope of our roof. i loved that my room was tiny, but there were endless possibilities for how i could re-position my bed. i loved to make lists and avoid practicing my piano books. (and now i cry because there is no piano in my house for me to avoid.) i loved seeing vacuum lines on my carpet. i loved turning on my lamp instead of the light. and i really loved nat king cole. i would put in the sleepless in seattle soundtrack to go to sleep on, and i would lay awake until i heard nat sing "stardust."

i'm putting it on the baby's naptime playlist.

i've always known that i have the very best of the best for friends.
and today, i received another piece of evidence to back my belief.
the sensational, practical sarah sent me a favorite things package.
just to brighten my day. just because she's amazing.
sarah, you know me so well. you knew i'd be wild about this.
this is so you. this is so me.
i am entirely crazy about people's favorite things.
their preferences. their loves. their likes. their dislikes.
it's just one of those things that i find ultra-fascinating.
i enjoy trying to store up info about my friends & their faves.
for example, i'm ecstatic that i know that..
rebecca would like creamed chipped beef on toast
christine would like her grandma's homemade noodles
sarah would like mint chocolate chip ice cream
haley would like golden grahams
chelsea would like the chicken sandwich from applebees
audra would like a jar of sunkist grapefruit
christina would like oatmeal caramel bars
and grant would like french fries from doghouse grill.
sarah, i can't thank you enough.
for a brown paper package, tied up with string
for the card you designed so sweetly
for the idea you executed so cleverly
for your words, written so brilliantly.
you are marvelous. & your favorite things are fabulous.
and you even threw in a little touch of home,
that is, my second home. your home.
warm vanilla sugar instantly takes me back to
the hallway bathroom in your house. soap always
smelled better there than anywhere else.
if you all would like to fill this comment section with your favorites,
please, please do. i guarantee they will all be read. with a huge smile.
because i'm like that. i'm mad about faves.
ps. sarah, this title is for you.

here's where i tell all.
being a homemaker. what it's really like.
what i've learned. what i do.
85 things from my first 10 months on the job.
i have a full-time job.
i am grant's helper.
i play house. but it's for real.
i plan a weekly menu.
i have a daily cleaning routine.
i make sure that the house looks nice. presentable.
i make sure that it's a home.
i make sure that it's the place where grant can relax.
i make a daily to-to list.
i keep things neat. i put things away. this makes me happy.
i have the freedom to search for my style.
i decorate. i rearrange.
i dream. i plan. i design.
i manage the laundry.
i make the bed.
i organize the closets.
i make grocery lists.
i make up recipes.
i work my magic on the collars of grant's shirts.
i know what the needs of my household are.
i discover what foods freeze well.
i keep track of what needs to be used up or thrown out.
i am perfecting french toast.
i scrub sinks. toilets. the tub.
i sweep & mop.
i dust.
i cook.
i bake.
i figure out what kind of side dish would go with quesadillas.
i wash sheets & pillowcases.
i sort. fold. & put away.
i do windows & mirrors.
i experiment with homemade mashed potatoes.
i do dishes.
i will be overjoyed to have a dishwasher someday.
i shovel snow.
i get the mail.
i run errands.
i watch for good sales.
i make grant's lunches.
i make grant cookies.
i can be at work without a commute.
i can listen to whatever music i'd like. and turn it up.
i can look forward to mondays, instead of dreading them.
i can eat lunch when i'm hungry,
instead of when someone comes to cover for me.
i can be my own self.
i can do things that make sense & are worthy of my time.
i can do things that are fulfilling. things i enjoy. things i can be proud of.
i don't ever worry about not having enough work to fill my day.
i can find a new recipe & get all the ingredients to try it. i live for this.
i collect pictures of kitchens & bedrooms & store them in a pink folder.
or on google docs.
i tell grant what features we should include in the house we're building.
in our dreams.
i vacuum right before grant gets home.
because that makes the house look perf.
i light candles.
i write little notes.
i sometimes wear sweats.
i sometimes wear dresses.
i wear whatever grant says looks nice.
i am ready to welcome him home when he comes in the door.
i ask about his day at work.
i have time to reply to emails.
i have time to watch grant coach basketball.
i have time to make my own bread.
i have time to get enough sleep.
i have time to go for a walk if it's nice outside.
i have time to take on projects.
i have time to do research.
i have time to workout.
i have time to devote to grant. to hang out with him.
to sit & be his companion.
i have time to write a blog.
i have time to think about other people.
i have time to read my bible.
i have time to memorize verses.
i have time to pray.
i can put these things on my to-do list.
because i can decide what my priorities are. not my boss.
i am never bored.
i am free. i am fulfilled.
this is my domain, my sphere, the place where i belong.
the place where i grow & thrive & flourish.
i am created for this.
i was born with a desire to make a home.
10 months. wow.
time flies when you love your job.
these have been the best months.
and that's what it's really like.
January 16, 2009
i tell myself on a regular basis that i would like to add more dresses
to my wardrobe. i am not very brave when it comes to the wearing of
clothes. i am distrustful of hats and other items that require self-
confidence. i am inclined to be "safe" with what i wear. you know,
blend in. basically, i am trying to be boring. well, it's time to step out
of my comfort zone.
dresses. i would like to wear them whenever i want and not feel
overdressed. i want to make them so much a part of my normal
apparel, that it's no big deal to slip one on and be in front of people
and be myself. women used to live in dresses. and why not? they
make one feel so feminine and put-together. there's a whole world of
ladylike out there, wish me luck as i venture out to find it & attempt
bravery as i wear it.
this year i am going to make a conscious effort to check the sale
racks wherever i go, and start loading up. i have already started my
collection with a couple of casuals that i picked up on clearance.
perfect for flip-flops and running errands. my next goal is to find a
couple of classy basics for weddings & other formal gatherings. and if i
had all the money in the world, i know where i would purchase these
sophisticated threads... shabby apple. a couple of my favorites are the
rita hayworth & the nine to five (on sale & also comes in black!), but
i am smitten with so many others. if i weren't so happy with being on
a budget & didn't suffer from such intense buyer's remorse, i would
surely indulge over at that delightful dress boutique. i have to remind
myself though, that part of the fun for me is finding a little treasure,
tucked away in the back corner, between two intertwined hangers, the
only one left, marked with an incredible price. that is matchless
satisfaction.
i will be sure to keep you posted if any progress is made with the task
of dressing up my wardrobe.
January 6, 2009
and so it begins.
January, February, March, even April.
The months of cold weather, minimal amounts of daylight, tedious schedules, & negligible holidays that constitute what I confess to be my least favorite part of the year.
I am amazed at the sudden and dramatic change that occurs within me every year during the first week of January. After Christmas is over and the holiday season releases its grip on the world, I am instantly ready for summer time. No more winter for me, thank you. Instead I'll take the sunshine, flip-flops, school vacation, trip to California, & summer camp special, all the way. Oh, what a detrimental attitude for one so happily nestled into a corner of wintry Minnesota. I'm frustrated with myself for not being cheerful about this stretch of the calendar. I need to change this mindset.
So am I trying to change? Well. That's a matter of opinion.
Maybe I tried on all of the sleeveless dresses in my closet yesterday, just to see if they still fit, you know. And I may or may not have looked through the entire VS swim 2009 catalogue that arrived in my mailbox this morning. A brand new pumice stone might have been added to my routine to create prim & pretty, sandal-ready feet...Colbie Caillat's sweet beachy songs may be playing on iTunes as I write this... and this afternoon I might have rifled through all the photos from our jamaica honeymoon last may.
Just maybe.
May I have a change of heart toward the reality of the long winter ahead. And fast.
May I live today and not wish it away.

I am not particularly skilled or knowledgeable in the field of music, yet I am amazed at the significance it holds in my life. I have realized this about myself: I must have music to accompany each and every activity throughout my day. It is essential. In order for me to enjoy the elements of my routine to the max, they must be supplemented with music. Does anyone else feel this way?
When I sit here and blog: a certain playlist on iTunes sets the mood. In the kitchen: I have a cd ready to blare in my old player from my bedroom growing up. While out and about in my running gear: my handy-dandy little ipod shuffle hooks on for the ride. In the bathroom: an ipod is connected to a clock radio-- instant shower sing-along enjoyment at my touch. Going to sleep: my laptop sends out sweet, soothing sounds. Every room in my house can be reached by several music sources. I made sure.
Ever since I created my first account several years ago, iTunes has become the hub of my life soundtrack. It is constantly, unnoticeably close at hand. But today, I am noticing it. And I am thankful for it.

about this blog

Hello, I'm Summer. A people-loving introvert whose hope and life is in Jesus. His promises are my passion and my ministry is homelife. This blog is a place for me to write about everyday things. Especially food. My favorite thing to do is sit around a table, lingering over a long meal with good conversation. I live with my husband and our 2 littles. We like blizzards, thrifting, grammar, guacamole, cheerful hearts, nice manners, good movies, and making simple, real, nutrient-dense food.

"If Christ be anything, He must be everything."
-C.H. Spurgeon
