Happy clementine season, guys! They're in the grocery stores! Okay, are you ready for Thanksgiving week?!! After a weekend of seeing Edward and Bella on the big screen (with a husband who was just as excited as me), filling up a shopping cart with essentials and luxuries and being able to pay for it, and seeing my little one playing happily at Grandma's house like such a big kid, I'm feeling very thankful. Yes. Dates and sufficient funds and cheerful babies. These are definitely things I am thankful for. This Thanksgiving, I'm thankful to be right where I am. Thank You Lord, for putting me right here. Thank You for placing me in this phase of family, with this husband, with these responsibilities, in this body, in this house, in this town.

I'm thankful for specifics..

That traffic is not a part of my life.
That we don't have too many places to go. Home is where I thrive.

That I feel so much better, stronger, and more energetic than last year.
That my husband loves me and wants the best for me. (even when I forget this)
For a girl just like me, right next to me.
For the time after dinner when I do the dishes and listen to them play wrestlemania.
For people that I love talking with.
For 2 bathrooms in our house. Upstairs and down.
For good food. For healing.
That I miss my daughter after she goes to bed.
For a simple, sweet daily routine. (routine! I love it.)
For a husband that I respect and trust and enjoy.
For the fun little shows that are part of our time together in the evening.
For baking. For banana bread.
For enough time to take showers and sleep.
For peace that stays with us, even though we have problems.
That God is in control of all the intricate functions of our bodies.
For a family full of brothers and sisters in Christ.
For hard work, and the initiative to do it.
That we don't have too much.
For His faithfulness.
For strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow.
For blessings all mine, with 10,000 beside.

(From Spurgeon. I love this.)

What are you thankful for about where you are right now?

Oh, and last week I said that I have something to tell you...
Come back tomorrow and find out!

1. went for a couple walks, because it is so ridiculously nice outside.
2. we have orchard apples! red baron, monarch, and honey crisp so far. yay.
3. made pesto. then pizza. then pesto pizza.
4. our first free netflix arrived. so now we have finally, finally seen 'twilight.'
5. and we are surprisingly crazy about it. like, we stayed up suuuper late to watch the second one. and woke up thinking about it. and we are still talking about it. (okay, i love it. i'll just say it.)
6. i am really happy every time a movie is good enough that grant stays awake till the end.
7. did some thrifting. found a bunch of stuff. you'll be seeing some in photos soon.
8. talked to my little sister. she's coming to visit soon.
9. planned a trip. on friday we are heading to the big city to spend the weekend shopping, eating, and going to a vikings game!
10. i am pumped. go vikes.

yesterday i announced that i am 'going abroad,' and honestly i felt the support come crashing in. it was all around me, the whole day. you gave me the best send-off. (even though i'm not really leaving, and you've all sweetly said that you will follow.) thank you for chiming in with cheers. i know guest posting is probably run-of-the-mill to most bloggers these days, but for me it still feels phenomenal. like such a privilege. thank you for being excited with me! i love blogging so much, and i never dreamed that i'd get to do it and receive pay. what a blessing. it's amazing how God opens doors like this. He is so good.

hello, readers! these are for you.
(i found a wild patch of them on my running route yesterday!)
just wanted to say thank you for reading.
you always show up.
you let me play my little show and tell game and applaud me as i do it.
you put in your vote of confidence, no matter what i'm talking about/in love with that day.
you send me sweet words. i read each and every one of them.
you write me emails. you ask me questions. i love this.
and i'm going to get better at being a swift responder!
when i change my look, you always come running with compliments.
you notice my baby steps in photography. and i know i'm overdue with a post about that.
you put up with my constant stream of lists and 'my new favorite recipe.'
(i claim that to be true way too often. i know.)
you inspire me to do new things.
you bring good things my way.
and you and i have become friends.
thanks for everything.

i've read them over and over. it feels so good to be understood. from my heart, i want to thank you for stopping to encourage me. it's still very surreal and the hurt keeps coming over me in waves, but the healing process has already begun. like you said, it will take time. i am clinging to the fact that this came in His perfect timing, and that He is the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles. (2 corinthians 1.3)
i will keep praying and keep doing the next thing, one of my favorite pieces of advice. it helps to stay busy and stick to my schedule. my family and i will have our broken hearts for awhile, but we can take joy in knowing we have a loving Lord who will heal them.

blizz2
nevermind. no grad school student here, yet. grant's first class, along with almost every other activity since noon yesterday, was cancelled due to the snowstorm that rolled in. i wonder, are you guys as blizzarded as we are? it's awfully white and windy 'round these parts. i've never felt so encased in snow before; the blanket has risen up to where it is level with our windows the whole way around our house. cool. literally.
the first class was rescheduled for saturday morning, so we'll have to wait to celebrate student re-entry then. for the time being, let me say a thousand thanks to all of you who left us mini pep talks and congrats and go get 'ems yesterday. the fact that you care enough to read about my life blows me away, but then to hear back from you too.. that's one happy surprise. thank you, friends. you made me that much more excited to enter a new phase of life.

good evening to all of you sweet people. thank you, oh thank you for being excited with me about our first house! the thrill of buying it swelled up in me all over again when i read all of your joyous little notes. i just want to tell you all about it. tomorrow. pictures. you can count on it.
more good news. it's not too late to start listening in.
i am hosting a new venture with ashley .. a bible study blog. if you're interested in studying esther (via beth moore) with us, please pop in anytime. i would love to see your faces over there. we're just getting our feet wet with this exciting idea and our goal is to make studying God's word together as accessible and schedule-friendly as possible. bible studies are amazing things, but sometimes it can be hard to find one that you can stick with in this hustle + bustle world. we hope this method will turn out to be the perfect fit for some of you. and in case you're swamped right now, we will be starting another book in a matter of weeks, so stay tuned for information about upcoming studies!

okay. am taking a break from thinking about camp things and rewinding to last week. i'm finally ready to unpack all the awesomeness from our trip. first of all, i want to say thank you to grant's amazing family. everybody was so sweet and entertained us to the max. thanks for taking care of us, belmonts and friends! and here's my list of new-to-me stuff + favorite things that i found while on holiday in california. hope you enjoy. 01. 'animal style' & 'extra toast' on my in-n-out burger. no pickles, no tomato. sauce, definitely. 02. anthropologie. my first visit ever. it was magical. 03. the volcano candle that was burning inside anthropologie. 04. california screamin' @ disney's california adventure. 05. churros and frozen chocolate bananas @ disney. overpriced, but delish. 06. jonesy and della. my ultra cute new canine friends. 07. yosemite national park. sentinel dome. glacier point. 08. the cart on the end of main street usa that makes gigantic corn dogs. 09. aladdin on stage at california adventure. 10. the 'celebrate' street party parade @ disneyland. 11. pinkberry. a friend told me that i must make a stop at this spot. she was so right. sweet + light + simple= incredible. i walked in and imediately fell under the pinkberry spell. pure frozen yogurt done up with fresh fruits and favorite cereals. mm. a place where dessert dreams come true. this alone is worth a trip to cali. 12. red mango. here's the story with this one.. we went to pinkberry for round two of the perfect dessert. but when we got up to the counter, the very nice young man said that they had closed up shop for the night. seeing the disappointment on our faces, he mentioned that if we wanted something very similar, to go to the original frozen yogurt spot.. red mango. the place that started it all. the dreamiest, creamiest treat of your life. mm, mm, mm! if and when you get there, try the new tangomonium flavor. my mouth will never be the same.

i'm back. haley's visit was grand. i miss her already. wish each of you could have gotten a snip of her magic, too. she's really fabulous at what she does. and she even brought me a new blow dryer! one of those nice hot tools ones that they use at the salon. sisters are nice like that.
a million thanks to all of you who dropped in to tell me what you thought of my new style. never have i been paid such sweet compliments! and here i was, feeling kinda foolish for posting silly photos that i took of myself in the mirror. but you all were so very nice and said such lovely things and you made me feel okay with it. i thank you. i am still crazy over that fresh new cut feeling. the different length of my ponytail, the change in weight on my shoulders, the decrease in conditioner in the shower. the shortness has got me feeling as free as a fourth-grader. yay.
and now, on to the continued camp questions, as promised. thanks for sending me your queries. you guys are so willing to indulge me. thank you, thank you. you make this fun.
no.7 what to pack. a pair of jeans for cool days and long grass. more than one pair of flip-flops, because the gravel wears them down to wicked thin. clothes that make you feel free & up-for-anything. bug spray. one towel for the bathhouse, and another one for laying in the grass. a mini fan to keep by your bunk for hot nights. flashlight. hand sanitizer. notebook. water bottle labeled with your name. camera. money for a camp t-shirt and a snickers ice cream bar at the canteen.
no.8 what religious activities are involved? each season of camp has an overarching theme centered around a specific bible verse and the theme is carried out through the morning and evening chapel sessions. there's also 1) team devotions: talking about the lesson from chapel. 2) quiet time: for a half-hour after lunch, everybody spreads out & finds a spot in the middle of a field, or under a tree, or by the lake to relax, read, pray, and think. and 3) cabin devotions: time to talk with your counselor about what's going on in your life.
no.9 what age groups do we work with? each week of camp in the month of july and first week of august is designated for a certain age group. we have a week for senior high, two weeks for junior high, one for 5th and 6th graders, and one for 3rd and 4th graders. during the rest of the weeks of the camp season the camp is rented by outside groups and the ages vary widely.
no.10 how to 'rough it.' my tried & true camp secrets. laundry basket instead of a suitcase. keep a stash of baby wipes underneath your bunk, your feet are going to be filthy at the end of the day. find a girl who can french braid- be her friend. sheets instead of a sleeping bag. bring bug spray, black paint, and a bandana for war games. put dryer sheets in between your blankets to keep spiders away (this really works.) wear long pants during the night game. bring a sweatshirt, even if it is 90 degrees in the shade. bring candy to bribe the cabin clean-up judges. sleep in and shower in the afternoon when there's no line. skip shaving. find a good body spray- who needs a shower? go back for seconds at supper, or you will starve in your bed that night. leave the straightener at home and learn to love the messy look.
grant said.. wear things more than once. pack light. keep your stuff organized and make things multi-purpose. don't bring 10 photos of you and your boyfriend to put on the windowsill in your cabin. and don't bring a book for free time.
no.11 what will become of the blog/will i have internet access? yes, i will have internet access and yes, the blog will be up and running. thank you for wanting me to stick around. what a treat for me. i know i can't make any promises, but i am hoping to update this spot as often as i do now. i've discovered that writing about my life makes me enjoy it all the more. so here's to a summer of filling up my camp archives and nights of sitting up in bed in brygger, telling you all about the day's adventures. speaking of brygger, here's where you can take a peek at what all the camp buildings look like.
you can bank on a camp q+a, part 3 to pop up soon. i didn't expect to break this down into so many sections, but i seem bent on giving these wordy responses and i wouldn't want to scare you away with a novel-length post. so for now, i will stop. over and out.
May 15, 2009
last week. the minute grant got home from work that day, he could tell that i was in the middle of a major mess. i needed paper towels- we were completely out- and i needed them fast. before he could even set down his backpack, i asked if he could go get some from the store, and he very nicely agreed. such a great guy, that grant.
when he returned he told me that he had picked out something for me, and he pulled out a box of chocolate teddy grahams. i gasped. he said that he'd read my blog at his desk earlier and had seen them on the list i had posted. let me tell you, those teddies completely won me over. i was no longer focused on the clean-up or the frustration, just my kind husband. how sweet of him to think of me when i had selfishly asked him to run an errand the second he walked in the door, before i even gave him a kiss hello. shame on me.
had grant not read my blog that day, there may not have been any teddies in that grocery sack, and i would still think he's an incredibly sweet guy. just the same, i want to say a big thank you to him for reading the words i write here everyday. that means the world to me. thank you for being interested in what i have to say. i like thinking about you reading my posts while you sit at your desk. and i especially like when you tell me that you like what you read. you're my most important critic. also, a shout out to blogger for ulterior benefits of the blog. like a surprise box of cheer-me-up chocolate teddy grahams.
oh, and the chocolate milk right there next to the box of teddies was also from grant. he brought home one of those cute little half pint cartons you get with your chili crispito in the school lunch line. skim chocolate milk.. be still my heart. i tossed a single ice cube into that frothy sweetness and it was perfection. mm. when else do i get to have chocolate milk? it doesn't exactly fit into my grocery fund. i consider it an ultra-luxury. right up there with orange juice. grant, it's the little gifts like this that are unforgettable to me. thank you.
last night. i want to remember forever what our evenings are like these days. just the two of us. being out on our own and living by our rules. like last night: grant picked me up at the gym and told me of all his exciting purchases at the grocery store, like bread on sale for 41 cents and a 3 lb. container of the potato salad he loves. i told him that i had worked on my triceps. we found something highly fascinating (and top secret) on a page of webspace, so we hopped in the car to go check it out. we came home and laid on the couch and didn't think about what time it was or what we should be doing. just enjoyed being together. we ate cereal on the floor while watching the finales of the office & 30 rock. grant sang his own rendition of heartless and inserted my name wherever he could fit it in. he made me laugh because he is adorable without even trying. i slipped a surprise slice of bacon onto his normal turkey sandwich and put it in the fridge for him to tote to school in the morning. we brushed our teeth together and talked about our first date and how the rest of the school year is going to be cake. it was a good night. i love living with grant.

May 8, 2009

was may 9th, not may 8th. the dates don't match up, but the memories do. it was the second friday in the month of may in the year of 2008. the day before my wedding. the day of the rehearsal dinner. the biggest friday of my life.

i woke up and immediately fell into survival mode. my coping method was just don't think about it too much. i knew that if i thought about it, the weight and reality and significance of the next two days would produce a fountain of unwanted emotion and nervousness. it would just be too much. i would be crushed under the momentousness of it. i fought back any special day thoughts. i put on my normal face & forced myself to think about normal things. it was kind of like sitting on the paper-lined bed in the doctor's office, as the nurse jokes around with me i laugh & act like the needle in her hand is not making my head pound with fear. just close your eyes and pretend it's no big deal. that's how i would get through this day. besides, i would not be getting a shot today. there would be no pain. it would just be my dreams coming true and everything that i've built up in my mind & everything i have my heart set on coming at me in one fell swoop within a thin stretch of 24 hours. that's all.

i put on some makeup, drove to wheatfields bakery & cafe and sat with my best friends. each of them a bridesmaid. we wore zip-up jackets and ponytails and shared a plate of pastries with an orange glaze. we didn't really talk about wedding things, which was good for me. they helped with my coping efforts. they made me laugh. it was all very normal of us. at the end of our breakfast we walked out by our cars and prayed. i love that we did that. we stood together and prayed for a good day. that everything would go smoothly and that we would all have fun during the wedding. it made me feel calm and strong and so confident in our friendship. then we slipped on our sunglasses and went our separate ways to face the rest of the day.

i drove to the mall, where i saw people going about their oh so regular days and that made me feel good. little did they all know, i was here to get my nails done for my wedding. i liked walking around all by myself, carrying around my little secret. i stopped by bath & body works and picked up some hand soap that was on sale. i wondered why i would bother to get hand soap on this day. i went to the top floor and found my favorite nail place where i got french tips painted on my own nails. i can't stand the fakes. i told the lady sitting next to me under the dryers that i was getting married tomorrow. i could not believe those words came out of my mouth. they sounded so surreal. i couldn't hold it in while she talked about her daughter getting married in 3 months. the secret was out. it was fun to see how happy it made the women around me when they all heard it.

when i got back to my parents' house, grant was standing by the fridge with a glass of water in his hand. he had arrived. for our wedding. we looked at each other knowingly. after today, we would never again be apart. we sat at the kitchen table eating lunch out of a white bag containing a big mac and a 1/4 pounder with cheese. i thought it was strangely fun that i would choose to eat so unhealthily hours before i would have to step into my wedding dress.
i ate my whole burger with relish. we slumped onto the couch in the living room and thought about what we should do. now that grant was with me, i was feeling better about acknowledging the importance of the day. we felt like we should be doing something wedding-ish. but everything had been figured out. all was in place. so we just sat there for awhile, thinking. waiting for nothing. discussing whether or not we should take a nap. enjoying the anticipation.

a few hours later, i walked into the church, holding grant's hand, freshly showered and feeling fancy free. the flutters had dissolved and i was ready to get this show on the road. i wore a skirt that i had borrowed from mom and my mini black sweater. i decided that it was too cold to be wearing flip-flops, but i didn't care. they were my favorite. plain black, worn-thin. i can be myself in those shoes. i wore them. once inside, i was engulfed in hugs. i couldn't wipe the smile off my face. all of my favorite people were going to be in one room together. for a minute or two, i felt the nervousness come creeping back in. i felt like i should be playing hostess. after all, this was my affair. i had invited all of them. i should make sure that everybody had been hugged and talked to and made welcome.. but i just couldn't do it. i was overwhelmed. i saw my bridesmaids and family and grant's family doing the small talking and hostessing for me and felt a wave of relieved gratitude sweep over me. such wonderful people. i resorted to clinging to grant's side, where i felt safe and serene. i sat back and let it all come together. i didn't have to do a thing. just smile and enjoy the evening everyone had worked so hard to create for us.

thank you, everyone. you made my rehearsal amazing.
i will never forget this friday, one year ago.

matching mondays. new campers. new camp threads.
see last year's gear over here at the camp store.
you might recognize a familiar face amongst the models.
thanks to all of you who participated in the new runners poll!
i loved reading what you thought & have already been able to
narrow down the options, thanks to your votes & comments.
you were most helpful. i love having other people weigh in.
in other news,
the strawberry jam you've been asking about is this kind.
don't judge a bottle by its not-so-spectacular label; it's oh so scrumptious.
and it's au naturel. you'll love it. you'll want to have a toast party.
which is something my friends & i actually did once. it was brilliant.
without a doubt, one of the best parties i've ever been to.
March 31, 2009
courtesy of my friend, tesa, who is as brilliant as they come.
she is masterfully devoted to the care & keeping of her home & family.
she inspires me.
this recipe is her adapted version of one that she found in this book.
it bakes up just right every time. so reliable. so scrumptious.
thank you, tesa!
the makings.
1 stick butter, room temp
1 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon (mine was a heaping one)
1 tsp. salt
1 c. very ripe bananas, mashed
1/2 c. sour cream
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1/2 c. walnuts or pecans, chopped
the prep.
cream butter & sugar; add eggs & beat well
sift together dry ingredients & blend into butter mixture
add bananas, sour cream, & vanilla; stir well
stir in nuts, if desired
pour into greased loaf pan
bake one hour in 350 degree oven, or until tester comes out clean
turn onto rack to cool.
slice & smear with butter.
store in pretty glass cake stand.
serve as a side with breakfast-for-dinner. (will be doing this tonight)
as you can see, i didn't mash my bananas too finely.
there's an itty bitty chunk up in the right corner.
but it still came out fine. and tastes stellar. yay.
in true party-of-two fashion, i halved the recipe.
this is becoming second-nature to me.
then instead of using the traditional loaf pan,
i poured it into one of my grandma's corningware baking dishes.
ohh, how i love these dishes. thanks, grandma.
so, if your wondering why my loaf is so short & square, that's why.
it's more like a banana cake. and that's okay by me.
March 30, 2009
the first installment in the framework series.. a chalkboard.
step one.. show your husband the idea. rachel is brilliant.
step two.. buy frame at thrift store for whopping 2 bucks.
step three.. sand it. paint it. stain it.
step four.. cut wood to fit. paint with chalkboard paint.
step five.. put it all together. fasten board into frame. hang it up.
step six.. write on.
chalkboards. what's not to love?
my french teacher instilled in me a healthy appreciation for them.
she would never allow the school to replace hers with the
white marker alternative. she loved her old greenish boards.
she always told us,
there's no sweeter sound than little scuffs of chalk on a chalkboard.
and ever since i found out there was such a thing as chalkboard paint,
i've had my heart set on having a board of my own. and now i do! yay.
dear grant: thank you.
not only did you help me with this project, you made it your own.
you are my favorite handy man.
dear readers: thank you all so very much for your responses to my in need post.
i am pleasantly crammed with clever ideas for my sweet surplus.
you are lovely. can't wait to put them to good use!
monday is here.
we've unpacked from our weekend jaunt. we're almost out of milk.
the washer is chugging & the dryer is churning.
am mapping out my menu for the week & listening to the wind roar.
expecting a snow storm to come rolling in tonight.
my bananas are at the point of perfection & will soon be smashed.
have been craving cinnamon banana bread for ages.
hoping the house will smell like sugar & spice when grant walks in.
mmm. a perfect way to celebrate the last monday in march.

i've always known that i have the very best of the best for friends.
and today, i received another piece of evidence to back my belief.
the sensational, practical sarah sent me a favorite things package.
just to brighten my day. just because she's amazing.
sarah, you know me so well. you knew i'd be wild about this.
this is so you. this is so me.
i am entirely crazy about people's favorite things.
their preferences. their loves. their likes. their dislikes.
it's just one of those things that i find ultra-fascinating.
i enjoy trying to store up info about my friends & their faves.
for example, i'm ecstatic that i know that..
rebecca would like creamed chipped beef on toast
christine would like her grandma's homemade noodles
sarah would like mint chocolate chip ice cream
haley would like golden grahams
chelsea would like the chicken sandwich from applebees
audra would like a jar of sunkist grapefruit
christina would like oatmeal caramel bars
and grant would like french fries from doghouse grill.
sarah, i can't thank you enough.
for a brown paper package, tied up with string
for the card you designed so sweetly
for the idea you executed so cleverly
for your words, written so brilliantly.
you are marvelous. & your favorite things are fabulous.
and you even threw in a little touch of home,
that is, my second home. your home.
warm vanilla sugar instantly takes me back to
the hallway bathroom in your house. soap always
smelled better there than anywhere else.
if you all would like to fill this comment section with your favorites,
please, please do. i guarantee they will all be read. with a huge smile.
because i'm like that. i'm mad about faves.
ps. sarah, this title is for you.

December 1, 2008
I looked up from folding laundry this monday morning and stepped over to the window to admire the scene outside.
A powdered sugar layer of snow was sweeping over the street, catching in all the cracks and dusting the edges of the sidewalk.
I've always loved the cloudy texture that snow has when it comes in small amounts.
This peaceful moment of admiration made me consider how grateful I am for the privilege of being in my home during the day.
I'm glad that I can take the time to just watch and be thankful.

about this blog

Hello, I'm Summer. A people-loving introvert whose hope and life is in Jesus. His promises are my passion and my ministry is homelife. This blog is a place for me to write about everyday things. Especially food. My favorite thing to do is sit around a table, lingering over a long meal with good conversation. I live with my husband and our 2 littles. We like blizzards, thrifting, grammar, guacamole, cheerful hearts, nice manners, good movies, and making simple, real, nutrient-dense food.

"If Christ be anything, He must be everything."
-C.H. Spurgeon
